Question about storing crankshafts

lol dude i got a reground crank at work sitting on a bed of tools waiting to go back into my motor.. pfft she'll be right..

realistically if its assembled properly, besides servicing its my right foot that garentees its life, and the life of the rods which usually die first anyway..

considdering the sort of stress that crank is gonna be under when its bolted into an engine, i think gravity is going to be the least of it's worries

You could always treat it like a battery and store it on some wood.

I'm not sure how much truth there is to it... however, considering that at 8k rpm, a crankshaft is like a wet noodle.... there could be something about it, especially for a racing engine.

Um, no, a crank isn't like a wet noodle at 8000 RPM, that's not even particulary fast...

Well, I don't mean "ram the pistons into the valves" wet noodle, but they do flex as RPM goes up. And no, 8,000 rpm isn't super fast.

If the crank in my engine can cope with 8000rpm, I personally have zero doubt that it can cope while lying down at 0rpm without becoming a banana.

Just remembered too that I've been down to the Ford engine plant in Geelong. It's a little hazy now, but the cranks lay flat as they were transported around between machining steps. And were also held by their ends while being machined (which would "bend" them much more than just lying there).

I coat all my Metal Parts in a protective spray called Flexi-Film from Wolfchester, It's a dedicated metal coating spray.
I also use it on my Jetski to cover the whole engine etc.
Bloody great stuff....
