    Default Charade + 20v

Has anyone seen an oldish charade (maybee mid '80's) converted to 20v? Is changing from a 1L 3cyl to a 1.6L4cyl legal? Obviously it's going to need an engineers report. I ask because i can get an old charade is awesome condition and no motor for free, and I have a spare blacktop to do something with... What a weapon it would be, the charade only weighs about 700kg! I'm going to take some measurements on the weekend to see if the engine will physically fit in the charade's bay. Does anyone know of any online australian charade forums?

KE10 also weighs 700kg... and it's RWD.. and it's toyota....

have you looked on google for charade forums?

think of it this way.... what car would you like to drive. if the answer is "charade, but it's too slow" then by all means, go ahead

it's not really a question of what i would like to drive, it's a matter of parts lying around and i should do something with them. Any input from a technical point of view?

It's been discussed before... If it is the G11 shell then you can forget about it, it will fit in a G10X/G20x shell but will require a fair amount of custom work. I wouldn't bother to be honest, buy an clapped out AE82.

my bad, i thought you were trying to create a practical car, not just a fun experiment

well, if the charade is FWD, then you have to fit the box in sideways as well.. it's pretty tight in there.... then cut down driveshafts etc...

unless it is for ofroad, and then you'd really want to start thinking about just fitting the whole AE subframe in as well as uprights and steering rack.... wider track, but probably easier in the end... and just cut away what body you need to to fit it.

why will it not fit into a G11, but will fit a G10*, They both have the same engine, and I thought the chassis were very similar.

i see this question asked and i kind of think back to the latest High Octane and that V8 twin turbo 5 second funny car/drag car that was made out of a Hyundai Coupe shell/chassis... and i ask myself.... why?

unless you're doing it for pure curiosity's sake and in that case bugger it.. just do it!

i dont think its going to be legal however, id be surprised if it fit without moving the firewall back and i think youre going to have a looooooong time before it will be driveable. not to mention how much that would cost. if its just an experiment then i personally dont see the justification of the spenditure... but if you want to use it on the road legally, then i suggest not using the budget WITZL method of making things from other things that wouldnt normally be associated with each other.. thats my $0.02...

A bloke at work looked into converting his charade to camry V6.
Measurements showed it would JUST fit in the engine bay.
He spoke to a few engineers and was told it was possible to do it legally, but would need somewere in order of $13,000+ in fabrication work to get it into the car.
Then need to look at brakes, suspension, wheels chassis strengthening ect.
He pretty much would have had to re-manufacture the car from the ground up.

20v isn't quite the same thing, but i'd have a serious chat with an Engineer ( and bank manager ) if you wanted to have a drive-it-to-the-shops road legal car.

But hey, if you have the bits and spare time, why not just mod it up into a crazy overpowered deamon and hit the offstreet drags / burnout comps?

    I'd pay to see that!

G11 Charade is just a facelift from the G10, same chassis and engine different gearbox ratios, headlights, front indicators, grille etc.

    I thought the G11 came before the G101, G102etc?

i wopuld be surprised if it was legal.

in NSW, 700kg car x 3 = 2100cc is the maximum that an engineer can sign off on without the car being registered as an Individually Constructed Vehicle. which then means it needs to meet all current (or at least the intent of) ADR's.. not for the faint hearted....

considering some workshops will happily charge $5000 to install a 4AG, 13K in fabrication is not that much

Seems I have confused things a little here...

G10X doesn't mean G10. There is G100 and G102, both the same shape but the G100 is carby and the G102 is injected. It's just easier to write G10X
