I'm not aware of any guides around, but when I did my GX81 GT Chaser to 1J conversion, I bought a jzx81 frontcut and swapped EVERYTHING from the cut to the chaser. It's quite hard to find a JZX81 frontcut now in half decent condition, most of the engines needs a rebuild and all the hoses etc require replacement.

The handy things you get in a jzx81 frontcut are the crossmember, powersteer lines/pump/resivour etc, Aircon compressor and lines, throttle cable, strut brace, AC condensor and lines to suit FMIC, Radiator if you want to stay with the hydro-fan setup from the cut, cruise control if you're lucky and a few other things.

yer, the only things i need to know tbh are the parts i need to change i.e crossmember, mounts etc.

what parts from your knowledge would i need to turf from the 1g set up and replace with others? and what do they come from?

    Thanks,

If you get a JZX81 engine, you use the brackets that come on the engine. Buy new MX83 rubber mounts as basically every secondhand mount out there will be on the verge of tearing the top out.

i know the engine came out of a soarer so i would be looking at buying mx83 mounts then?, and the other parts i would have to replace are the parts previously mentioned as 'handy' parts?

by the way thank you again for all this info =]

If you have a soarer engine then you need JZX81 engine brackets (or JZX90 brackets reversed on the block), MX83 insulators (the rubber mounts) and a frontsump assembly with pickup, the front-sump oil drain fitting and dipstick setup.

probably last question , how expensive roughly is getting all the sump parts and is it a job i could do at home?

front sump setups seem to go for $200-300 secondhand, not that hard to do at home if you can flip the engine over easily. Make sure you use a new genuine gasket for the oil pickup and dont overtorque the sump bolts or you will shear them off.

oh ok that sounds pretty good =]

so to conclude this, i need all the parts u said were 'handy' i need the engine mounts u mentioned and the rubbers and i need to do the sump change., im still using the same gear box the 1ggte had but i have the bellhousing from the 1jz to fit on it to make it work if that sounds right?. wow this seems alot cheaper then paying a shop 3-4k to do it.. ty!

you will also need a 2JZGE flywheel, clutch and bolts to go with the JZA80 W58 bellhousing. If you're retaining your original gearbox then you will definately need the JZX81 engine brackets otherwise your transmission mount will not line up anymore and the driveshaft would need shortening.

If you've got a JZZ30 loom and ECU there's a fair amount of re-wiring required to make it run in the x80 body and you will need to sort out a thermofan setup also. Just those two things can add up to somewhere between $500-1000 depending on the way you do it.

A jzx81 dump-pipe bolts up to the GX81 1GGTE exhaust at the cat, if you dont have a JZX81 dump you will need to get something made or modified to suit.

Basically put a price next to everything you need, add it all up and then double the amount to set your base budget.

    Eg:
    Flyweel - $100
    Clutch - $400
Flywheel to Crank bolts - $50
    Throttle Cable - $50
    JZX81 complete AC setup - $400
    JZX81 complete PS setup - $250
    JZX81 engine brackets - $150
    MX83 engine insulators - $160
    Loom modifications - $400
    Heater lines - $40
    JZ complete front-sump assembly - $250
    Thermofans - $100
    Thermofan switch & Fan Relay - $60
    Oil and Filter - $50
    Powersteer fluid - $30
    Coolant - $50
    Brake fluid - $10
    FMIC - $250
FMIC Pipework and joiners - $400
JZX dump pipe modification - $100
Major service kit for engine (waterpump, seals, belts, idlers, tensioner etc) - $1000
Any extra tools you dont have needed to do the job... etc etc....

That adds up quite quickly, but you can do the swap the half-arsed way and have dodgey powersteering lines running all over the bay with poorly mounted resivours, non-working AC and a leaky old 1J. I like to do my conversions so once they're done, I dont need to worry about taking the car off the road in the near future to fix anything. I've learnt from my mistakes in the past
