Speed Sensor 1JZ-GTE

Can anyone tell me if the ECU uses the gearbox speed sensor input for any of the tuning and mapping? I currently have a manual 1JZ ecu and the engine check light comes on, pulled the code and only got speed sensor code, the car drives fine, just wanting to know if hooking up a speed sensor might return better fuel economy or a small power increase.

I believe it does have an effect when coming to a stop I believe, not sure of what other effects to be honest.

I'd wire up the speed sensor, there really isn't any reason not to have it hooked up, and it's one wire, simple as!

FYI: The signal goes from the Sensor on the gearbox (or cable) to the dash and then to the engine ECU on most Toyotas

Wilbo, that's great except its not in a toyota, and I don't have a speed sensor on my R154. The engines in a VL Commodore, which has a cable driven dash, any suggestions on how to hook one up?

I'm going to assume it's a VL

RB30 ecu pinouts indicate that the ECU gets a speed signal, which I'd guess comes from the dash...

I'm not sure if it's 4 pulses / rev the same as most Toyota's so that's something to check!

Great, I've been able to find out that the VL dash does contain a speed sensor and it is a 2 pulse 1250 pulses/km

Most Toyota's are 4 pulse, 637rev = 1km.

So 2548 pulse per Km...

You could use a speedo corrector to make it closer to correct (Jaycar one only doubles it at the max I think?), or just try it as it is...

One thing to think about is that if you hook it up properly you'll also get speed cut at 180kph

I'd personally rather have no signal than an incorrect signal.
Who knows what the ecu will do if thinks you are doing half the speed you actually are.
Chances are nothing bad, but who knows for sure.

90% of people who do conversions don't wire it up.
I drove around without one wired up for a few weeks, then wired it up. There was no difference in the drivability between the two.
This was with a manual ecu and a manual box.
Might not be able to say the same for auto's.
