    Default 2T-GEU Piston Options

    Hey everybody,

It's that holiday time of year again for uni students and keen watchers of my thread might have noticed I bought a 2TG. Well, a 2TGEU to be exact, though it's got twin Solex 40s to go on it.

Anyway! Many dollars have been spent so far on block and head reco, all new timing gear, rings, bearings, etc etc etc. I'm not building up a crazy bored & stroked hybrid so I when I had the block dipped and decked, I told them just to hone the blocks and not bore it out.

Unfortunately, my thorough inspection of the pistons turned out to be not thorough enough. I noticed particularly in piston #3 that a little piece had broken off and a small crack had begun to form in the skirt (pics below). Tiny cracks are present in three of the four pistons, though the pics only show piston 3 (hopefully the cracks are visible to you).

Now this begs the question...standard size pistons aren't particularly easy to come by...if at all?

So I see myself with five viable options (bear in mind I've already bought rings for standard pistons):

Buy standard pistons (hard to find ...unless I've not come across somewhere that does sell them)
Buy oversized pistons, bite the bullet and bore and hone the cylinders again.
Buy a 3T crank & standard pistons in good condition, use the rings I've got and flycut the pistons to clear. (depends on second-hand availability of course)
    Bore+stroke to 1.9L...wallet says ouchie.
Pretend the cracks don't exist and put them in anyway...

Hi, I had this similar dilemma in SA. Word of advice, do it once and do it properly. I have had a previous engine build and it was a massive waste of money doing it twice over!

I am part way through a rebuild on a 2tg engine, head is done but bottom end needs to be done.

I was told mine would need to be bored out as a hone would not address the slight stepping I had at the top of my bores.

I could not find standard pistons or 1mm oversize pistons for the 2tg in AUS. Duralite 2t and 3t pistons yes but these are different to the 2tg pistons.

In the end I went to Chris Milton and they gave me a few options for 2tg pistons or 3t pistons for a hybrid built. I thought their prices were reasonable enough but not cheap. It would come to about 900-1500 for a good built. Go in and see them if you can, I cant remember the exact prices. Keen to see what you find out as I am keen to get this finished on my engine one day too!

    Cheers,

    Pete

Cheers poida yeah might be worth looking for used pistons, I'll have a chat to Chris Milton too and see what they've got to offer...I just can't see the point in forgies for a stock engine still, maybe they've got cheaper cast ones!

scoobzd cheers, looks familiar to I site I found, but 2T and 3T pistons are different to their twincam cousins.

Those two statements don;t really match so well...

As above, do it right, do it once... might not happen, but if those pistons let go, who knows what part of the engine they will take with them (might even be enough to trash the expensively prepared block itself)?

Everything I've ever done on an engine which I've taken as 'near enough' ended up in catastrophe for the engine in question - believe me it isn't a mistake your wallet will cope with very often.

    Arrow Re: 2T-GEU Piston Options

Quick look unda the house resulted in these...

    ALL 2-T / 3-T

On the left 2-T / 3-T on the right 2-TG with valve reliefs as a comparision

The 2/3 -T pistons were used for like 2 months.

$200 posted and they're yours with as new rings n gudgeon pins. .

Get the valve reliefs milled and you'll have as new 2-TG pistons...

Or can supply NEW RINGS - yup, have those too (2-T n 3-T)

Oooo could be seriously interested scoobz. What compression would they give once the valve reliefs are cut?

    Question Re: 2T-GEU Piston Options

    Oh crap...

Forgot to mention the pistons are 1.50 over sized ( bugger) but they come with rings

Comp would be slightly up on stock (factory) 175lbs?

The NEW rings are .000 - standard - Won't fit - LOL durh (slaps head)

Ive got the same problem oddessy. Except im putting a twin cam head on a 2T block. Question Scoobzd or anyone else that can help me. What would be the compression ratio if i just had my 2T pistons milled down. Do you think id really notice the difference in a mildly built NA 2T/2TG hybrid?

That might be the best bet. Im also after some valves for it as one of the exhaust vavles has come apart. SW motor sport had some Nitrided ones for $22 intake and $14 exhaust respectivly. I think ill just go with them.

    2-T left - 2-TG right

Length seems the same but there is a "slight" bevel on the top of the 2-TG above the last ring groove - Dunno if thats just the manufacturer or the norm for 2_TG pistons ?

    Heres Option 6,

I have a set of 3tgte pistons and rods sitting here doing nothing (pulled out and replaced with forgies. Nothing wrong with the pistons. You could put these in, get a 3tgte manifold and turbo (which I will have avliable in a couple of months also).

You probably need injection for this appraoch though. Without the turbo the engine would be a little slugish
