Default 83 Hilux repower what to use

    Bought 83 lux 4wd manual for $350.
Wont to get a little more go out of it.
Looking at replacing the old 18rc with something else in the 4 cylinder range.
Not interested in V6 or V8 conversions to pricy.
Looking at 18rg but not a lot around, wont to stay petrol and over the 2Lt mark.
    Any thoughts?

Hey Lino - I'm in the same boat; have bought an '83 RN41 (2WD) and the 18R-C just isn't cutting it.

Have been looking at the 1UZ option but wouldn't mind some info on the 18R-G if anyone can shed some light. - is it a straight swap?

Sorry didn't start out meaning to hijack your tread...

what about a 2rz ? you can get carby ones for a simpler conversion. your gearbox is probably a 4 speed ? you would probably need to change it for a g series 5 speed to give a larger range of bellhousings. a commodore v6 conversion would be simple and relatively cheap.

A holden V8 transplant would be pretty straight forward and cheap. Look around some of the 4x4 forums and you can find bellhousings and engine mounts making it a bolt in job... engineerable too.

Cheapest, easiest would have to be 253.

yes, a 253 would be easiest for fiment and wiring up. at the end of the day though, the newest 253 is nearly 30 years old. in my opinion, a newer efi engine, while requiring more fiddling with fuel pumps and wiring would be a bit easier to live with. a bit better economy and so on.

it depends on the purpose of the vehicle too. is it mainly going to be offroad ? a daily ? registered ?

It will be completely off road but still has to comply with road rules and be regoed to get to and from 4wd grounds.

Hmmmmmm... well if was me i would go the 22R from a Hi-Lux...

it's a "R" motor so will bolt up to your gearbox..

also the Hi-Lux motors are Carby so easy to mod'

my son has a 22R carby motor in his RA60...
this motor is a competition rock crawler motor..
i built this motor a few years ago & has a shit load of torque..

Running a Weber 32/36, Stage 3 Cam, Double row Valve Springs, Full port job & lots more..
i had to use an extra, extra heavy duty clutch as it fried the standard heavy duty..

PM me if you want more info on this if you want to go this way..

    cheers..
