    Default ma61 1jz diff ratios

    hey fellas,

I have a ma61 with a stock ish 1jz (zorst and cooler) and im just wondering what everyone is running diff ratio wise?

It had a 3.9 in it which started to wine so ive obtained a 3.58 or 3.73 (cant tell which). Thought i would try it before i got it rebuild (torsen etc) to see if it was noisey and what the ratio was like.

Obviously its nicer on the highway, but it feels like 3rd and 4th have lost some puff. I Gteched 0-100 it and its within .3 second difference. So maybe its the placebo effect.

Just curious to see what people are running and their thoughts.

I've got a 4.11 behind my 2jz (not exactly a 1jz, I know ) in my MA61. It's great except first gear is entirely useless beyond idling around carparks, and the part where 110km/h in 5th is just shy of 3k rpm can get rather annoying.

I definitely want to change to something much taller in the future.

i have a 3.58 at the mo, def lost power in 3rd and 4th compared to 4.1 and lost revs on the highway which isnt a big problem. 120km at 3000
will be going back to a 4.1 soon

    more importantly, what gbox?

I'd be going a bit smaller than the 4.11 if you can. 3.9 or 3.73 would be ideal

    tis a late model w58

what about with more power? smaller would be better? or does the 1jz lack the torque for it.

    More boost = more torque.

In the end, taller (smaller number : 1) will be more usable with more power. But it also depends on your intended use as well.

For me, 4.11 is too short for relaxed street driving, with the occasional squirt at the drag strip. I'm forever changing gears to keep the revs/noise down on the street. And at the strip 1st and 2nd wind out a little too quickly for my liking.

I too like a 3.58. Lower revs when cruising at highway speeds.

I had a 3.58 behind a 200rwkw 7M with 58, small turbo loaded up really quick, anything over 3.5 and 1st would of been useless.

I loved it, I'm a little worried about the 3.9 diff I've just built up for my auto. May rev to high on the fwy and may also not load it up enough in 1st

after driving it for a couple of days the 3.58 is nicer on the highway, but the lack of punch in 3rd is still bothering me. Stitt you didnt find 3rd/4th sluggish?

    Going from a 4.11 to a 3.53, don't forget you'll be going 17-20kp/h faster when shifting into 3rd (Assuming you're shifting at/near redline).

Not that that will account for a huge difference in acceleration, but its certainly a factor.

Besides, if you're anything like me you gradually become desensitised to the power. There was once a time where acceleration in 4th was exciting with 200rwkw. Now with 320rwkw I'm bored again. Hopefully the soon to be ~370rwkw figure should fix that for a while, and somehow not break my w58.

Anyway back on topic to the point, you might also find this useful:

I have never driven the car with that engine set up with any other ratio. It seemed to that it was still to short I would of liked a 3.3 or so. It still reved quite high on the hwy.

the 7M with small turbo was really responsive and had bucket loads of torque down low so pulled really well from down low.
