    Default AW11 MR2 Indicator Dramas

    Hi everyone,

I've recently gotten myself a nice little 85 AW11 MR2 (JDM Import). The dude that i bought it from didn't really have much of an idea and he told me that when he tried to install a CD player the indicators and windscreen wiper stopped working.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what he has done?
I have checked all the wiring coming from the indicator switch and it all seems fine, I have even pulled the actual indicator switch apart and cleaned all the contacts inside, and yes I have checked the fuses, and yes the actual switch is working fine..
Unfortunately Auto Electrics aren't really my forte and i dont really know what i'm looking for. It's got me stuffed as to why the radio circuits and indicator circuits have anything to do with each other???

    Cheers,
    Matt

I would first suggest that you check the Hazard light switch, if this is not plugged in your indicators won't work, the other possible cause is a faulty flasher can but I can't remember where they are on the aw11. Check the hazard switch first and go from there.

Check all the fuses first, see if the previous owner didn't blow some trying to wire in the CD player with the battery still connected. Hopefully he didn't melt a ground wire somewhere under the dash....or utilize the power from one of those circuits to run the CD player......

    Wipers have a seperate fuse
turn/haz should be on TURN/GAG fuse

Flasher relay is (if the 89 service manual is correct) on the drivers side, up inside the dash, looking at the diagram it looks like it's quite high up (higher than the kickpanel relays/fuses anyway) I've never tried to find mine so i dunno if it's better to go in from the top....or from the bottom

I forgot to mention that the hazards still work fine. When i try to use the indicators i get nothing, no clicks of relays trying to work or anything so im assuming the hazards and the indicators use the same flasher relay so it it HAS to be a power or earth wire for the indicator switch disconnected somewhere? I will have a look at the mess of wires where the cd player should be to see if i can find anything that looks amiss. Can anyone confirm that there will be a wire running through the loom behind the cd player that will have something to do with the indicators?
    Cheers,
    Matt

There are a few wires that go from the hazard switch to the indicator switch that can cause your problem, try this wiring diagram half way down on the left shows the hazard and indicator switch, the wire colours are on the lines if your not familiar with wiring diagrams, This is for 88 model but should be very similar if not the same for the indicator circuit anyway.

Problem fixed. Turned out someone had wired the alarm system earth wire to the earth wire for each of the indicators, crazy. This was causing a short....
