Hilux diff centres are G-series. same as what you'd find in MKIII supra's z20 soarer's etc. so there is a fair few options.
cheapest would be just finding a stock Supra lsd and get it fitted or just weld your current one up![]()
hay guys,
since i have almost finished my engine conversion i have been driving it and have come to the conclusion that a lsd is going to be much more fun..
the hilux is a RN41 81' 2wd.
the rear axles have been modified to suit disc brakes so i really want to find something that will just replace the diff centre and bolt in. what models should i be looking for? will a 4wd one fit or are the axles a different size?
thanks

Supra LSD will need a spacer get a Hilux LSD . I have a Hilux one with good clutches if you want one of them.
Jealousy is a curse
what do you mean by a spacer?
i don't know much about diff's so all the info i can get will help heaps!
would a mx83 cressida have a lsd? and would that fit?
The IRS centres have a different offset behind the ring gear. Some MX83s have LSDs
Jealousy is a curse
mx83 grande's come with a stock lsd.
If you take a g-series centre to a diff shop they should be able to swap it over for you.
i can get a diff from a mx83 from the wreckers for $50 if i remove it myself.. so the shaft sizes on it should be the same as the hilux one?
if there anyway of telling if its a G-series diff on the outside?
good info guys thanks![]()
id like to jump in here and ask what type of lsd's people have been using in a lux diff and how happy they have been with them?
reason i ask is the lux diff i had in the celica had a brand new tru track lsd fitted the same time it was re-built and the lsd didnt last long before it started opening up from time to time and to be honest i wasnt too happy. Ive heard its fairly common for clutch type lsd's to do this, correct me if im wrong?

I was told that the Hilux LSD is not real good because they dont last long as a LSD. A torsen LSD would be much better. The torsen centre from a Supra needs a spacer between the crown wheel and diff centre if you use a hilux crown wheel. Detroit make a torsen centre to suit a hilux diff or you could use an auto locker centre like a Lockrite but it might be a bit difficult to stop the tyres chirping as you corner.
I use a Supra Torsen LSD with the 3mm spacer ring between the diff centre and original crown wheel.
Done 20,000 km so far and have had no issues at all. Best thing I ever did!
thats what i don't want to do.. i want an option to leave the axles intact and just replace the centre.
i used a 3.7 centre from a ma70 auto turbo, just took both centres to the diff shop and got them to make 1.
lsd spins up 2 every time in a straight line but only ever 1 when coming out of a corner.
can an lsd be welded up?
the 3.7 ratio is good but a 3.5 would be better. just super hard to find.
ok guys,

this is a page of part numbers and info on the mx83 that is at the wreckers with a lsd in it.
this is my ute diff with same info

is it possible to tell off that if they are compatible?
thanks

G series is G series all the centres are the same, same axle width, same splines, whether it is a Live or IRS centre, because of the shape of the IRS VS Live diff housing (for want of a better word) you need a spacer to run IRS stuff in a Live housing.
However you haven't mention changing ratio's you should just be able to get the lsd centre fitted to your crown wheel and pinion, and have no issues.
Me I would stay away from Clutch types LSD's well ones unserviced out of a older car they are going to be Fubar, they are atleast 20years old, and will probably single spin with a bit of grut through them. I run an F series true trak in my wagon atm and have just built and bought a G series True trak for the new G series going under there. Not sure what my diff guy did but I have a 3.9 from an IRS diff, fitted to the true trak in my Live housing.
Also no where in this thread have you mention if the MX83 @ the wreckers is a Grande cause only the grande had the LSD im fairly sure.
