Default AIR FLOW METRES, MZ20 vs LS400

    Hey Peoples
Just wondering if there is any difference between the MZ20 7MGTE AFM and the
1990 LS400 AFM ( im assuming its off the V8)
If so, can u use the LS400 AFM as an upgrade for the 7MGTE???

This has been covered a squillion times,

    http://suprasonic.org/lexusriemer/lexusnotes.html

edit - but to save you some effort (that page is long and in some parts a little complex)

the LS400 AFM (aka lexus AFM aka 1uz AFM) Can be used on a 7mgte as a performance modification, as it flows more air. However the extra ~25% more air flowing into the engine is not registered by the ECU and you will hit fuel cut very quickly, to get around this you should upgrade your injectors to 550cc units as this kind of equals out the extra air flowing through the 1uz AFM, with about the same increase in fuel. Best combined with an air/fuel controller to make sure things are just right.

You can gain a nice lump of torque and i've heard about 10-15rwkw

not alot, just the usual, filter, slight boost increase and exhaust.
its a awsome engine for its age. soon ill replace the head gasket, head bolts and maybe look out for a turbo kit on ebay or something.
another question, if i was to get a turbo kit for my 7m should i replace the ecu? if so any recomendations??

With most toyotas you can run a larger turbo on a stock ecu with some sender benders but I would just bit the bullet and get an aftermarket ecu like a microtech, haltech etc. depending on what you need out of it. See what other people have used and had good results with on 7m’s. Then you can ditch the lexus AFM as well and use a map sensor

I have been told that if you use the lexus afm, and 550s, to obtain the best result, you should also use something like an apexi SAFC to finly tune your air/fuel ratio.

Although its not nessisary, its probly worth the extra cash, as it could save you some $$$$ if the engine runs to lean...
