    Default HEEEELLP! 88 HiLux with a 2Y and 4spd

yes yes yes you read right - my 88 lux has a 1.8L 2Y and 4 spd box - i think it's an import but completely unsure - never seen a 2Y in a lux of this vintage anyway.

chasing a 5spd box BAAAAAD and just found out my FIL has an older corona 5 spd floating around.

what are the odds of the changeover being compatible?

i have tried a search, but maybe someone could help with a more specific thread....?

    thanks.

it appears i'm running a W46, and the 5 speed in the corona is a W55.

being all a W series box, is it at all likely possible that they will match up with no mods? what about the tailshaft?

very hard to find info on the W46

well you would prob be able to swap over the bell onto the new box if its the same as all the W boxes, as for shaft id say it would be different but i could be wrong

You may have to change tailshafts, Its unknown. The w55 sounds like it will bolt up (W50 compatability)
Even if you have to muck around with tailshafts it will probably be an easy fix. I changed an auto yn57 to manual, bought the box out of the paper and did not know what model, I suspect a w55. Auto tailshaft was not going to fit so a trip to just toyota wrecking and a few dollars and a tape measure fixed that. The thing you will have to watch out for is the shifter position to make sure it relates to the hole in your floor pan. Also there are several different types of rear gearbox mounts and they need to line up.
    should be an efortless conversion.
    Cheers Dave

It depends if the W46 is a 4 speed version of the W5x, or a different iteration of the W40/W50 series.

W40/W50 is not compatible (bellhousing wise) with the W5x

Also normally 2WD boxes don't suit 4WD's (although not sure if your Hilux is 2 or 4 WD)

    sorry - yes lux is a 2WD.

so the W5* box won't bolt to the W4* bellhousing.....?

Your Hilux would be a Grinner by the sounds of it. They normally have grinner stickers on the front guards. Most of the Y series engines had a G52 five speed bolted to them but Grinners had a four speed box. It shouldn't be hard to convert to five speed because there are heaps of Hilux utes about with five speeds in them. If it is a column shift gearchange you could use a Tarago gearbox.

no not at all - it's got this extension "thingo" running to the shift position from the gearbox.

it looks VERY physically similar to the 'rona box.
