    Default RN85R Clutch Change

The clutch on the ute is well rooted. (I wish the guy who changed the engine 5000km ago pointed this out!)

Does anyone know if there are any real gotchya's on changing an rn85r (22r) clutch?

If it is a fairly straight forward change, then I will order the replacement today and have a crack on the weekend.

Otherwise it will fall into the too hard basket and sit there, or I will pay someone else to do it.

    Hi mate,

Yeah, if its anything like the clutch swap I just did in my celica last weekend then its quite straightforward. R series engine would have W series box I assume, so all good to this point.

From here I advise you get a gym membership (if you are build somewhat slight like myself... ok and lazy/unfit) or arrange a mate or two to help out! Working at home under jack stands getting even a T series box in and out left me buggered and sore all over.

Honestly I'd get a quote for fitting the clutch from a local joint or two and figure out if you would like to spend up to 8hrs of your weekend cursing or put up with paper cuts from trying to extract cash from somewhere!

I'll do my own clutch again next time simply because I'm a sucker for punishment, and there is the satisfaction of doing it yourself.

    Cheers,
    Jason

Thanks guys - I called my mechanic and he said approx 2 hours plus gb oil should be around $300 (I already have the clutch).

I would like to do it myself, but at that price and I don't have much time in the next few months, I think I will go with the mechanic option.

If like William I had a hoist... hopefully that will come with the extension... but that is a few years away.

If you have got a pully somewhere and can attatch it to the roog or a beam above the car just hook up some chains to either rail and slowly hoist it up. I know its not the safest idea but it works wonders.

Also make sure there is a jack under the box it makes things alot easier. If you can grab the clutch locator off your mechanic this would also help out heaps. Dont forget to drain the box before its out because as soon as you pull the driveshaft out its going to start pissing out, it also makes the box somewhat lighter.

Good luck, i just changed the clutch in my Celica and that was a pain in the ass. What clutch are you going for? OEM replacment? HD (I really dont recommend Excedy for Heavy Duty clutch kits on these cars, i had big problems with mine).
    Cheers, Alex
