Default El-Chepo Intake Pod Filter - 1JZ - Got rid of IT!

    Hullo all,
I just wanted to share my experience for all those who use an aftermarket
intake filter , Pod type, mushroom type etc.etc.

When I did my recent 1JZ engine conversion into my Beemer, I had lying around in my storeroom an older version pod filter (el chepo one from the breakers) that I had used before. So I handed the unit to the mechanic who did the swap for me and it was installed. Now because I knew what kinda power to expect from the 1JZ, I was kinda concerned when I got the car and the engine felt out of huff & puff and was drinking fuel more than I had expected.

So finally this past weekend I took it to my buddies place who dabbles in mods (home style), he started the engine pushed on the accelerator and heard the engine and said to me, get rid of that filter and get something like a HKS Mushroom or K&N one..he told me the engine could not breath and was running rich and if I kept it like that, trouble would come a calling. So left his place when in to a shop near my home to see what filter I could find on short notice. Got myself a HKS Mushroom, installed it and almost instantly the engine felt stronger.
Paid the man got in and drove away a happy-camper.
Car runs much much more powerful (like how a 1JZ ought to ) and the fuel consumption is EXCELLANT

So if anyone thinks they have a 'heavy out of huff' 1JZ and are looking for possibilities. the answer could be a simple one and might have missed it LIKE ME

Sorry for the rant folks, just wanted to share.

    Cheers
    Dispatcher

Get rid of it as soon as you can unless you are specially interested in rebuilding engine bottom. HKS and other mushroom-looking filters only won't allow sparrows, small stones etc into your engine. They do pass plenty of dust and sand however.

So you 'upgraded' to a death mushroom? Might want to go back to the store and pickup a real air filter...

ive had a HKS death pod on both my 4A's with no ill effects, still wouldnt recommend it though. they really dont stop anything except small birds.

i keep saying i'll upgrade it, but just cbf plus nothing else will fit till i stick the turbo on.
