Default Hilux Diff makes Much noise after front flange replaced? (Crush washer??)

I had to replace the front flange on my Hilux diff because it had the wrong bolt holes for my tail shaft.

So when I did it back up, I make sure that the markings on bolt holder doovy still lined up, and that it was at around the same tension.

Now there is a chance that the diff is just short of oil, but now on decel and also under a bit of accel (bit more than idle) it makes HEAPS of noise, noise ALA taxi type grinding...

Firstly I'm going to check the oil level, as I suspect it's a bit low, but maybe not much, and certainly not enough to hear a noise THAT bad!!!

What are peoples thoughts on this one?

That nut also holds the pinion gear in.......

From my very little understanding of how to setup the mesh pattern of the gears....id say you may have modified this mesh pattern. You may need to reshim the diff.....others can confirm this.

Yeah defanitely what you've done is moved the pinion out of alignment with the crown wheel you will need to get it reshimmed and honestly you're better of paying a professional to do it for you

Did you set the bearing preload? When you crushed the tube.

I don't THINK I set it (certainly didn't know I was doing it.)

I think your right, I might just pull it out and get a pro to do it.

Hilux diffs are front loading and thus don't required "Shimming". They have a pair of tension nuts either on the outsides of the centre bearings which have locking brackets. These tension nuts are also used to move the centre side to side and adjust the mesh.

To adjust the mesh, you need the centre out. Replacing the bearings and seals at the same time (if not already done), is a good idea.
