    Default TA22-Rear spring help

Just after some help selecting some rear springs for my 22.

I am trying to set the car up for minor street use (cruises and thats about it) and track days.

I have set the front up with 5kg coilovers and KYB AGX adjustables, all new bushes and a heavier swaybar (more info in my members rides). I have set the front height so that the shock has about 60/40 bump and droop, it also looks good at this height which is a bonus.

In the rear I have now got a heavier swaybar and adjustable panhard rod. I want to work out some springs to suit, the trouble I am having is there is no off the shelf springs that suit. So I am happy to get some custom springs made in a linear rate, as for track work I think linear will be better, I will then source some shorter shocks to suit and keep the spring captive.

What rate do people recommend or are using, I was thinking around 200-220 pounds?
Because it is quite low(I think around 50-60mm) do people shorten the bumpstop to give a little more travel?
Any idea on shorter shocks that will bolt in or minor mod?

    Cheers Brendan

    For the rears I'm using:
225lb King springs on an Otomoto coil over kit
JIN adjustable height and 11 way dampen settings shocks (AE86 shocks but fit TA22)
    24mm Pedders sway bar

It is very firm and street friendly even with stretched tires 225/40/14. I have drilled out the bump stops and have short springs in combination with the short stroke shocks.

Hi, just went right through your members ride thread, awesome car lots of really cool bits added, could only find one mention of your rear suspension.
Are your shocks separate to your springs, or are the coilovers all mounted to the original shock mounts?
So many questions, do you have any pic's you might like to share?

The spring rate sounds good though, but a 24mm swaybar on the rear sounds mighty stiff.

The threaded sleeve is a lot shorter to compensate for the low ride height. The spring in this picture is the spring that came with the Otomoto coil over kit, I swapped them over to the King spring due to the height difference.
I use to have an 18mm Selby sway bar and that was too soft with the wheel and tire combo I was running.

I ran a Lovell's Mk1 Escort Heavy Duty Front spring at the rear of my 22 and this puts the Panhard bar parallel to the road. No idea of the weight of it but I also run without a rear sway bar.

Thanks for the picture, answers all my questions. Looks like a good setup, and it is height adjustable too. Problem is I want to do a diff swap in the future and don't want to waste the sleeve on the T series diff, but need the springs now so I can think about registering the car. But custom springs are about $300 and the sleeve kit is about the same so it probably won't matter.
Have you done anything to strengthen where the sleeve is welded to the diff, or to support the hollow sleeve, maybe pipe up the middle or something?

    Hi Rodger,

Do you remember wether they were standard height or lowered springs? These may get me going for rego without a great cost, then when the diff swap happens i can do the height adjustable thing. At the moment it is at the right height with cut springs, but they just fall out when jacking up the car, certainly needs shorter shocks. I will have a look under and see how the panhard looks compared to the ground.

I have used a spare strut tub for support. There was an option to use the Greddy Type S kit for the AE86 but it was expensive.
Otomoto have adjustable rear coil overs for AE86 now:

Cool, thanks for the pic's, that was along the lines of what I was thinking, it looks like to much trouble though with the stock T series, I might wait until I have upgraded the diff.

    Digging up an old thread:

Looking at doing this myself, but the ID of the springs is only 64mm, yet I think need something closer to an ID of 90mm to satisfy the upper spring seat. Fonzy, how did the coilover springs go fitting at the top?
