Yeah sounds like that solenoid is jammed open the front washer you have no choice but to replace and i'd say more the likely it's going to be a genuine unit
Hi,
I've got an sv 21 wagon and am having a problem with the rear washer, when I press the washer button the rear wiper activates but the front jet squirts water rather then the rear ones, nothing comes out from the rear ones. Checking out the routing for the front and back washer i can see that there is a junction that looks like some kind of solenoid that diverts the water from front to back and both are powered by the same pump. This seems non serviceable. Has anybody had trouble with this item that has been resolved with a replacement from Toyota? Thanks.
Getting your missus to help bleed the brakes isn't everybody's idea of quality time.

Yeah rang today 85$. I'll be down the wreckers with a dumb look on my face asking,
"how much do want for this bloody thing"?.

You wont get one at the Dismantlers... they are all rooted, put up with no rear washer, or buy a new one..
MMmmmm or maybe I can have the best of both worlds, I'll buy a new one and never use it, problem solved.

yeah ones that have have been sitting around are probably gonna be worse then yours so either bye the new one or don't worry about it, how often do you use it anyway??
You could always bodge it somehow with a bottle from a car that has a separate pump for front/rear, haven't seen it on a Toyota that I can remember though, but I think some bitsashitis had it like that with two pumps on the one bottle (sigma, magna wagons...) you'd have to bodge wiring to suit of course, and live with yourself for tainting your camry in this way...Either way, worth having a sticky beak at other cars...
better option than $85, but always an idea if you're not planning to keep it in concourse condition...

Hi all
Just about to put an SV21 wagon on the road myself and have come across the same problem, Toyota price for the solenoid is now $112 up front plus a three week wait. No auto stores or auto electricians I came across have an aftermarket option, so best advice I got was to suck it up and go genuine. Having seen some hints about some people using a washer pump from an AE101, I looked but could not find any writeup for the wiring solution. Now that I have solved the puzzle, I figured people might like to see how it's done:
To convert the SV21's standard pump and diverter setup to an AE101 or similar pump, you will need the following parts from the wreckers:
1. washer pump from AE101 or similar including the 3 wire plug, wiring harness and rubber grommet from the bottle, I got mine from a 2000 camry wagon, looks to be pretty much the same:

2. piece of wiring harness from any car with two prong male plug to suit the standard SV21 washer pump plug:

3. length of extra washer hose and 2-3 hose connectors (can buy new if you want to be fancy)
4. length of wire and wiring connectors of your choice
first, you need to remove the standard washer bottle from the SV21, and remove the standard pump and grommet from it. The hole for the pump will need to be reamed out to around 21mm to accept the new pump/grommet, once done it should look like this. The new pump should now fit the SV21 bottle like it was meant to be there, with enough room to fit/remove the plug if necessary. Check for water leaks and bottle mod is done:

next, you need to modify the wiring harness for the new pump. The three wire plug is labelled 1,2 and 3. 2 is the ignition power source, 1 and 3 are the negative connections for front/back pumping. Connect your two wire male plug to the new pumps plug and put a connector onto the third wire like this:

Next mod is inside the car at the rear wiper switch, on my SV21 camry wagon you need to cut the blue/white wire at this point of the harness, and run a new wire connecting this wire to the third wire on your new pump's plug (blue/yellow wire in pic above). This stops the rear wiper switch pumping to the front washers and activates only the rear washer off the new pump, without affecting the other functions of this switch:
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
Once this is done, mock it up and figure out which side of the pump is activated by your front and rear wiper switches. Where the original SV21 washer diverter solenoid mounts at the strut tower, you have three hose connections, one to the front jets, one to the rear jet, and one to the washer bottle. Remove the solenoid and connect the hoses from one side of the pump to the front washer jets. Then connect your new section of washer hose from the rear side of the new pump to the rear washer hose where the diverter was.
Clean and adjust your washer jets as necessary, and test your buttons to make sure the right washer is activated by the right switch, before completing the bottle install and replacing the stone guards. If they are the wrong way around, just change the hoses at the pump.
Enjoy your fully functioning rear washer jet for the cost of wrecker parts (I got the parts needed for around $15) and relax knowing you can then easily/cheaply replace the pump from at least of couple of different late model Toyota wagons/hatchbacks!
Cheers
