Need to know what wires come from ST185/184 air con compressor

Hey guys,
Need to know what wires come off of the ST185 air con compressor on the 3sgte engine, and also what wires come from the 5sfe air con compressor in a ST184.

Any pictures would be helpful too if you had any.

Not sure with this exact model as my 3s has no air con, but in my experience compressors are normally setup 2 ways:

2 wires: 1 is earth and 1 is power. This can pretty easily be worked out which is which using a test light.

1 wire: which is power and it earths out through the body.

These wires of course activate the clutch on the compressor.

If there were more wires on a compressor I'd say they were for a pressure switch.

Not sure if this is the answer you were after.

I have an air con compressor on my car but the plug going to it has been hacked up. The wiring loom plug has 4 wires that are to go to the air con compressor, but there are only two wires on the compressor (power and ground as u said). I've got a feeling I have the wrong compressor so need to verify.

If anybody can duck outside to their st185 and check for me id be very thankful

I'll go out and try to look closer - from memory, there's the magnetic relay and a motion sensor underneath (so the a/c electronics know the compressor is turning) - i think.

After some more searching I believe this is the air con compressor from the ST185

Can u verify that u have that bulge part on the right hand side of the compressor ( looking into your engine bay ) chuck? Thats the RPM sensor

4 wires from my ST185 AC comp.

The st185 has 4 wires in the plug.
Black/white wire is power supply to clutch magenet.
white/red & white/blue are for the speed sensor. (they go directly to the a/c amplifier)
yellow/black is called the lockup solenoid. Its on the back of the compressor.
(also goes diectly to a/c amplifier.)

The st184 is exactly the same as the st185 minus the yellow/black wire for the lockup soleniod.

What does the lockup solenoid do?
I guess my question is; if you used a ST184 comp on a ST185 and left that yellow/black disconnected, would the AC still work ok?
