i can only say one thing... subframe enamel which is labelled as satin black actually comes out gloss![]()
Has anyone here had any experience with satin paint finishes on cars? I'm not just talking about spray can matte black... I'd like to try a proper satin finish on my car.
I'd like to know about recommended products and practices if anyone can help.
Cheers

Satin white eh?
That would be an interesting look...
One question i have about non-gloss finishes is the durability.
I just cant imagine them looking as good after a few years.
You cant just "polish out" marks, scratches, etc like you can with gloss.

There is matte clear available in 2k finishes. It's goes on instead of gloss clear and is has far less sheen than a white 2k single coat with matting agent added. Exactly like the finish in the pic above.
It's quite easy to spray, no more difficult than gloss, but any dust/shit/dry spots/runs cannot be wet sanded out so the environment needs to be clinically clean and the painter experienced. The odd bit of dust doesn't show, buy fluff, runs and dry spots stick out like the proverbial.
I test painted a motorcycle fairing in matte clear over pearl navy blue and it looks fantastic. Looks great on wheels too.
EDIT: I'd say MWP's concerns are about spot on. It's likely impossible to repair without respraying the entire panel and i'd not be surprised if frequent washing with say sponges, had a slight polishing effect giving some areas more sheen than others.
Having said that, the surface is very hard and super resistant to scratching.
A light wax doesn't seem to upset the low sheen too much either but i'd assume that different colours might react differently. After a few coats it might start to get too high a lustre and need to be stripped back to the raw finish.

We have a car in " Satin" finish.
Anytime it gets marked ( damaged) we have to get it resprayed as you cannot polish out any marks.

Just had a quick chat to a friend who is a detailer.
This is what he said.
As for polishing: polishing only brings out the gloss level/capability of the paint your working with. the actual cutting process simply levels out the clear coat to provide a flat surface for light to reflect off, which makes it look shiny. with satin, there is no pre-existing gloss in the paint so you can't make it glossy. (based on the assumption that this is a satin clear coated finish)

I don't agree, but i've not tried polishing the matte clear coat. However, i have noticed that on cars with a matte section, eg later w202 chassis mercedes c class had a colour coded but matte trim between the bumpers and the panel and if they are polished, they become glossy. Perhaps not quite as glossy as true gloss clear, but it fucks up the matte very nicely.
Matte is gay.
Satin is where it's at.
