Reuse the nuts, get new gaskets (aftermarket) get new seals under the nuts (toyota)
or . Seal the seals with gasket goo.
Hi guys,
Oil has gotten a bit low and I'm getting intermittent puffs of smoke from the rocker cover gasket (ae101 smallport gze --not running any forced induction). This would mean the rocker cover gasket is leaking, yes?
I've got a spare rooted 4age and I just took the rocker cover off (never done this before). It's assembled with the 8 nuts/washers and a gasket for each side. Is it okay to reuse the nuts or should I get some new ones from Toyota? Also is it okay if I do them up all as tight as I can with a socket or do they need to be torqued specifically via a torque wrench?
I'm hoping it's just that gasket that's leaking. There was no power loss or anything before that.
Cheers![]()

Sorry I should say valve cover gasket but everyone seems to use the terms interchangeably.
Ok so got the seals/washers and gaskets from Toyota.
Do you say to go aftermarket because of price or quality?
Gaskets were $29/each. Part no. 1121316010
Washers $10.40 for 8. Part no. 9021006013.

You mean that stuff yeah?
I asked the guy if I could get some and he said he couldn't find it and that it wasn't really necessary, only on something like the sump. He said try repco if I really wanted to. Thanks for the tip though didn't think to look in the manual. Now I can go get some![]()
