Default TA22. Are bigger brake calipers available?

Instead of the usual brake upgrade using the Corona strut etc etc for the TA22 is it possible to fit a bigger 4pot caliper one or something with more gripping power to the original setup? I know the disc is small but would a powerful caliper not do the same job? Any suggestions please.

Anything is possible, BUT fitting a big caliper to a stock TA22 disc wouldn't be a good idea. When it comes to braking you really need to match the disc and caliper.

Eg a 4 spot caliper of a small thin disc would just cause the disc to overheat as well as lose potential braking because of such a mistmatch.

Spend the $$$$ and get the XT130 strut, bigger disc and hilux or corona calipers. Its an easy upgrade for a TA22.

btw, I have a set of corona caliplers for sale now if your interested,

    Cheers,
    Simon

    Hi,

I'm sure there are things that may fit, but it is best to get the disc upgraded also as the bigger calipers will put a lot more that into that small disc.

For Trini I decided to upgrade the brakes without going through the usual Corona struts, Peugot discs and what ever other "bitsa" upgrade. I have purchased the Hopper Stoppers upgrade, which is for old Celicas such as the TA22-to-RA28 models. It is a larger disc (which you have the option of being slotted and drilled), with larger calipers, wheel bearings and cap, plus small braided brake line to connect to your existing solid brake lines. They are, by default, a 5-stud kit, and therefore will cost you $50 more to get it in the usual 4-stud to suit the Celica.

This kit is designed to fit onto your existing struts and no need to purchase bits of other cars etc to make it work. The only extra thing you should do is to upgrade your brake master cylinder to a 1-inch diameter to take advantage of the bigger calipers.

Go to www.hoppers.com.au and check out the upgrade section for Toyotas and you'll see the kit. You can also ring them and ask questions, as they are quite helpful and friendly.

The hopper stoppers looks very good.If Simon had the complete package that would be tempting as well. Thanks for the advice . I live in the UK so will work out postage to see which would offer best deal.

Corona strut would be the best deal hands-down. That's why we do it River only bought that kit because he is scared of getting his hands dirty You wouldn't want to run anything on the ta22 strut, I believe they have tiny wheel bearings, smaller then ra28 ones

You'll also need to change some brake lines around and have some spacers to make sure the Hopper's calipers line up. I'm still trying to get mine to line up...

The Hopper stopper kit for a TA22 is around $1300, expensive for what it is IMO. The XT130 strut, bigger discs and Corona or hilux calipers will be a far cheaper option and will provide much better braking than the stock set up...You should be able to get all these bits for about half the cost of hopper stoppers.

I've just upgraded mine for 4 spot hilux calipers from the Corona twins and have now fitted a pajero master cylinder, first test drive will be this weekend...

    Hi,

Yep, the Hoppers Stoppers are not cheap, but better than the bitsa option.

It all comes down to what you want and what you are willing to spend.

The XT struts, peugot discs etc is a good cheap solution that will be perfectly adequate for your needs.

I would of gone that way, but my personal preference is to reduce the number of donor car components in my vehicle and, when it comes to brakes, spend the money to get the best I can. I find the HS brakes, with the slotted discs - while not cheap - suit my needs and tastes for how I want my car.

    Fair point River..

Picking the parts that suit your taste is very important when building any type of car. ITs not always the cheapest option thats best..

    Hi,

Agreed. You can't put a price on taste and personal preference.

Not to sound (too) negative, but 6 months on and I'm still trying to get my Hoppers 'right'. Not what I would have expected for $1400.

They do seem to be better than the stock 22 brake set-up, but have had lots of teething problems.

At least it's all a bolt up deal and it works You haven't fitted the kit yet have you? The posts by Invid must have you worried.
The calipers that they use in the hopper stoppers kit are made by pbr, the same people who make all the local commodore calipers and the rotors would no doubt be a form of falcon rotor. Sounds a little bit bitsa to me Those rotors are a decent size, but I am working on an even bigger upgrade for the corona strut. The only reason I would get that kit is if I had money to burn and needed 5 stud as well as a brake upgrade.

Anything is possible really, just requires enough time and dedication. For example this:

MPV discs, RX7 calipers with bridges. Custom bracket.... There are hundreds of combinations available, and i dont for a second believe that an "off the shelf" system can suit every car.

Nope. Not worried at all by Invids posts. Just 'cos he's still stuffing around trying to get them to fit doesn't mean I'll have the same problems.

1JZRolla has 23 struts and the HS brakes. They fitted perfectly and the car stops on a dime. I see no reason to be worried at all about fitting the HS brakes.

Fortunately I do have money to burn and I choose to burn in whatever way makes me happy. I work hard for my money and deal with a lot of dickheads throughout the process, so when I get it I spend it how I want and on what I want.
