    Default any difference between 5spd (st184) vs 5 spd(st185)

is there difference in the gear ratios between both types of gearbox, i know the obvious difference is one has the extension on it for awd, and one doesnt...
If i was to remove the rear wheel drive component & cap it off, on the st185 box i have and use it for fwd only would it be more or less suitable the st184 5spd manual , ( feel free to tell me the model codes for each gear box as i have no idea) .. as a rebuilt 3sgte , and new ct26 will be pushing it along..

plenty of people use the s53/4 gear box- the gear box attached to NA 3sge,3sfe and 5sfe motors when making a gt2(turbo fwd celica) mainly as they are cheap and don't require any mucking around to fit it.

i think you need to use the gt4 drive shafts if you use the E153 box, but i'm not sure how simple it is to properly remove the transfer case.

the gear ratios are different. the s54 attached to the 3sge motor has short ratio's (close to 4000rpm@100kph in 5th) but attached to the 5sfe they're longer(sub 3000rpm@100kph in 5th)

obviously the gt4 box is stronger tho the early ones had common syncro problems, havent heard of many gt2's having gearbox issues with a relatively standard 3sgte.

i was talking to a toyota wrecker reecently and he stated something along the lines that the currennt gt4 5 sp box i have wont be suitable due to a different mouning on that box , is this the case? Im unsure if he was just trying to sell me another box.

    close to 4000rpm@100kph in 5th
    are you sure about that?

    fwiw: in a stock ST185, 5th gear @ 100kph = approx 2700rpm

that was the early s53 box, ie the st162's. but the sw20 s54 rev quite high as well for the NA's.

my sw20 e153 is the same as your st185

the st185 boxes can be fitted for FWD use, but i'm not sure which mounts from which body (st184/5) you need.

If you're chasing a box to handle more power and torque than the standard ST184 S series transmission, save yourself the hassle of trying to convert an AWD box to 2WD - just start with an E153 MR2 box and do the necessary shifter linkage mods to suit it's new application.

Thanx guys , most of the wreckers in Melbourne, that have similarities, in their business names ,to this car club, which i wont name for legal purposes, have all gone down the path of phone call failure ,when seeking advice on which gearboxes, are compatible for my application. . .one stood out which was quite helpful which i rang roughly a week ago, who gave me a quote ,on all the other bits required for an auto to manual conversion.. then rang this number a second time, a week or so later , and enquired about the E153 box, another worker from the same company liquid papered all the good done the week the week before, without having a clue or the capacity to relay my question to someone there in regards to the E153 box, wikipedia has a spot of info on the s series boxes but nothing on the e series...

I am also wanting to sell the awd drive gearbox i have in my possession, but i am too young a member to post it up yet..

eaiest way would be to get the e153 box from the v6 camry.

what HP are you chasing anyway? if it's just a relativley stock turbo motor then even the s54 will be able to cope a fair bit of abuse and they're cheaper than the e153.

if you go teh e15 rpute then get one from a late 93 on turbo mr2 for better syncro's and more liekly to get LSD too.

Im not chasing massive hp, im quite content with what was once the factory standard, the auto powered 3sge i once had running , was like molasses when moving from a stationary position, even if just was crossing the road and waiting for on comin traffic to clear , the time it took to get moving was quite annoying, and if a gap on the oncoming lane wasnt huge, possibly quite dangerous too.( once or twice i may have made some new freinds this way)..
Now the last wrecker that broke my heart with bad news said the the mr2 box was an awd drive box , is this the case..

the mr2 box is not AWD. the reason for the molasses is more down to the auto box than the power itself. the 3sge in the st18x's had 160hp which isnt bad.

yeh it's a while since i've driven an st162, but i had a series 1 first and i'm pretty sure it revved close (3800@100kph) but still substantially more than my current st162 with the st184 box which is only 2800rpm. and my turbo mr2 was about the same.
