It has to be able to compensate for varying length, either with splines, a rubber dounut /metalistic joint or whatever you've got right now. Take your pick.
Hi Guys,
I am currently looking at all things drive line related in my TA23 as I am about to put an R31 skyline diff in.
The tailshaft is the factory 1 piece unit. Looking from the rear universal forward the shaft dissapears up a 'sleeve', this sleeve continues forward masquerading as the tailshaft and necks down at the front to attach the front universal joint. For all intents it appears to be a 2 piece arrangement i.e. one piece of tube slid up the guts of another 5mm larger diameter tube.
I have read rumors of some sort of rubber dampened '1pc' tailshaft and am wondering if this is what I have?
If any of you are still with me and understand what I am trying to describe I would like to know if this tailshaft is worth modifying to mate up with my skyline diff or am I better off long term just getting a custom tailshaft made up?
Cheers,
Jason

'I've scrapped better.' John stated when asked about the car by the guy with the silver tipped cowboy boots!
It sounds just like a dampened tail shaft, which from my experience are to be avoided.
The rear half of my Cressidas 2 piece shaft has this dampening (I think it was called velvet drive or something?) feature, & after installing a 1J & driving it for a few months the 2 tubes were twisting, disbonding the rubber layer, and as it twisted it got shorter and started pulling the yoke out of the gearbox.
I had it replaced with a solid shaft & it was problem solved.
Get it replaced with solid is my recommendation.
Thanks guys,
Looks like I will use either an EL falcon or HQ tailshaft then!
Cheers,
Jason
