pretty sure you'll be ok to just replace the boot mate if its not making any noises or showing any signs of wear. re-grease the fucker though
Hey, im new to the whole FWD thing coz im not exactly a fan of them..
While this is not directly a toyota question, the model of car shouldnt matter..
I went down south last weekend and i think i fucked one of my CV boots..
Not sure what the cause was.. but the boot seems to be split and spitting grease all over the inside of the wheel..
Anyway, my question is what problems can this cause? im guessing that eventually it can fuck the CV joint itself.. but how long do i have? will it actually fuck the CV joint? can you just get the boot replaced or does it require replacing the whole CV... Its not making any clicking noises or anything...
anyway, sorry for the noob question, but i just know CBF about front wheel drives..
cheers in advance..![]()

formerly GTI-TRD now coming at you with 4WD turbo power!
NZJDM coming soon - pm your JDM requirements
You can replace the boot if it hasnt gone without to long, but eventually the grease is lost and the cv kills itself...
Worth replaceing quickly, but such an effort regardless...
Generally i try to go without for as long as possible, and then i replace the whole CV at one time... wreckers ftw, cost same amount for a whole cv then it will for just a boot

ahh, wreckers might not be an option... the car is an audi 80... not too many wreckers.. here in WA anyway..
I wanna see what caused it before i replace it... i just lowered it... A LOT, so im worried something rubbed on it causing it to split...
But that seems really unlikely coz nothing really sits close to it...

get a boot kit my last one was under $20 its a messy job but cheaper than a new cv
once the grease is gone and the dirt gets in it goes quickly
If its an audi, replace the boot from a repco or soemthing asap. Its going to be alot cheaper then replacing the whole cv...
You'd notice if something was cutting it, and its prolly more likely the 'new' angle that it sees...

Jase
Ahh, good point... prob dont help that the bump stops on that side are all but gone.... so combined with the angle, its also copping some serious jolts too..Originally Posted by Smokey228

PITA the job but cheaper to fix now than to fix a CV later. CV's for my corolla have been quite cheap - at $80 ea for new ones INSTALLED but i doubt youll have that luck with Audi.
Daily Driver: Red Ae93 Project: My TA22 - now with 3s-gteD is for Disco, E is for Dancing
yeah, tends not to be cheap with Audi... ill see what the damage is at some point this week... hopefully it just split due to age, and not due to some sort of physical impact..Originally Posted by LeeRoy

u can run for 15000-20000kms without a boot....the magna just got its CV joints and boots replaced!! was driving around for a year with it ticking and grinding, day after day!, not happy! but now i am!!!
Alot of cars simply split CV boots cause of age and wear, so you wont have to worry about it being sumthing that has hit the boot!

And the winner of the big car race is......HOT ROD ZOIDBERG!
Some shops have a machine which stretches and shrinks a new boot in place of the old one without having to dismantle the joint... it's less messy, and easier, plus it's a generic boot they use
But if you don't mind getting messy it won't be an expensive exercise to replace it, there are generic boots you can get which get cut down to the right size
The sooner you do it, the less likely you are to fuck the joint. Dirt and water get in, grease gets out... certainly will decrease the lifespan!
