Default front chassie rail tie bar (how to fab) for AE86 or similar

    as per title..

has anyone fab'd up a front chassie rail tie bar (for ae86) (the bit that ties the front chassie rails together at the front, also has the lower rad' support brackets and the front of the castor rod mounts bolt to it)

i was gonna make one out of some 50mm RHS just arguing with dad how to attach it at the ends.. i want to plate it in and weld it all he wants to weld bits of angle to the rhs and bolt it in..

so if anyone has done it or seen it done, dig up some pics for me please

its cracked from flexing and its in not so good shape.. i also want to use it as a central from jacking point..
as i cant get my jack under the front bar and intercooler enought to get to the engine x member..

the whole front end of my car will be recieving a lot of strengthening and this is one of the things on the list..

bolt in means removable, but not sure you need that bit to be removable.. would it help access to anything?

weld in and plated would be stronger. which is maybe more important if you are getting flex...

i had to say something relative to the question, i was just interested in the car.

2 first pix still dont work, maybe a file name error, they dont have .jpg on the end

keep going with your tube frame

oldcorollas - yes thats exactly what i was thinking.. i never have to remove it unless its going to be in a decent accident.. which could happen...

only concern is that the welds might just pull a chunk of the chassie rail out and brake off.. unlikely but stranger things have happened.. this car has cracked both strut towers out of the front end and also broken half the spot welds off from the firwall and where the top rail goes to the 'a' pillar.... these things will be fixed by re aligning the chassie and mig welding everything in sight also going to plate the high stress area's that have become evident 'weak' spots

and yep they were missing the 'jpg' from the end.. not sure how or why but they're fixed now finally

I think this guy has pics somewhere of the re-enforced front parts of an AE86 rally car: http://forums.evolutionm.net/northwe...car-build.html

    somewhere in the build anyway.

what is the car being used for? track? rally?

ok so found a few pics he describes it as 1/8th angle so not rhs... kinda looks like he used the original ends where it goes onto the chassie rails ... maybe

    few pics

don't forget that there will be a bash plate (in the car pictured above) under the motor helping - a bit - to tie the front together .

that white one looks good, wlthough removing all the rest of the metal in the front, maybe not so

it would be good to weld it in, and then add gusset/fillet pieces to spread the load on the chassis rails..

yeh thats pretty much exactly what im thinking.. altho dad was along the lines off welding a section on angle.. say `160mm long to the ends of the new tie bar and then bolting it in..
but i feel that welding it in would be stronger and possibly neater way to do it
