    Default Which R154 for JZA80?

    Hey Guys,

I am going to be helping a mate put a 2JZGTE in his SZ Supra.

We are looking at putting in a R154, but are unsure what gearbox we need.
Some of the info I have found says that I need a Soarer JZZ30 box, but I dont know if this is supposed to be the remote shifter type, or the one that is very similar to the JZA70 box.

We are obviously trying to get all the right parts up front, so if anyone has done a similar conversion and could let us know, that would be great.

    Thanks,

    Herus

JZZ30 is the ideal one. The Soarer and Supra chassis are pretty much identical. Good luck finding one though

Is there much stuffing around getting the JZA70 one in?

Shifter position, bellhousing a different shape, etc?

If you intend on using all the other JZA70 manual conversiopn parts then yes there are quite a few differences judging by this thread on a JZA70 R154 manual conversion into a JZZ30 Soarer

The car is already a manual, and Ive heard that you dont need a remote shifter for the JZA80 R154.
Am trying to confirm all of this.

You definitely need the remote shifter if you want it to be anywhere near the factory location; the JZA80 boxes (V160 and W58) both have a remote shifter.

A JZA70 box will bolt up OK but you'll probably have to butcher the tunnel a bit.

JZX90/JZX100/JZX110/JZZ30 are all the R154's that will be suitable

The JZA70 boxes will need a custom shifter-extension to get the shifter far enough back, so it's not ideal, but still can be made to work.

As Sciflyer noted, there were two versions of the R154 fitted to the JZZ30

Early 91-93 model with rear most in housing shifter position

note the JZZ30 goose neck shifter - a JZA70 shifter comes out under the radio in a JZZ30 otherwise

Later 93-00 model with remote shifter

There are two distinct transmission tunnel cutouts with the JZZ30 to suit either version, so it will come down to what position the JZA80 tunnel cutout is closest to.

So we can use any JZZ30 box, or even a JZA70 box, if we can find a gooseneck shifter?

Does the JZZ30 remote shifter gear bolt straight onto a JZA70 box?
I know Wilbo covered this in another thread, but he had JZX100 remote shifter vs JZA70.

I suggest getting whatever R154 is around...and R154 that can take the JZA80 W58 gearbox mount would be a preference (Not all R154 can take this gbox mount!)

If you get a remote JZZ30, then that's easiest, but otherwise I'd just do the below... stolen from a google image search (HOWEVER, I'd get the angle correct! Unlike the pic)...

You can do this with the parts you have on a non-remote box, and it shouldn't take that long or cost much if you can't do it your self...

If I was doing it again, I'd extend my non-remote shifter
