Default MX83 ignition switch no workies!! (may be starter??)

    Hey al

my ignition switch has been playing up in my Cressida, the switch is now obsolete from toyota and cant be bought non-gen.

has anyone had this issue and wat they did to fix it?

i have a sneaking suspicion that there is a chance it may be the starter, is this common to go also?

Is it just the starter thats not engaging? (I.e. all other positions of the switch work correctly)

It could also the be neutral start switch on the side of the box. Had this issue with me old cressida. Jiggling the shifter would make it work occasionally (Was able to fix it by adjusting it in that case)

More than likely it will be the starter if the only simptom is it not cranking in the start position.

get the barrel re-tumblered by a locksmith if it is indeed the barrel.

had mine done 4 or 5 yrs ago and no dramas since.

i doubt it's the tumblers - more likely it's the contacts in the switch part that are corroded/gunked up... or the starter solenoid,

If it's anything like the MA61, the grease in it had turned to a gacky green-shit and the contact points for the starter wiper were pitted. I was getting significant resistance across all the points in it.

I cleaned up the contact pads with emery-board, put a bit more of a bend on all the contact wipers, cleaned everything with metho, greased selected parts of it with some silicon grease Mick had stashed away and the "won't start when most needed" bullshit behavior stopped.

I have taken out the starter to get checked by my works auto elecs, they reckon it sounds like a solenoid too, if it's not then I will look at the switch ( which is NLA btw )

    have you read this yet?

can be fixed with a simple relay and some wires.
