    Default Fuel Cell Design

Was planning on buying a fuel cell for the track car or making one out of stainless but i have found an aluminium fabricator who seems to like making me things for bugger all, so will get him to knock me up a fuel cell and a dry sump tank.

aiming for around the 40lt mark.... rough dimensions i have come up with are 320 high and 350 long & wide. fill from the top straight into the tank and bolt the thing down to the boot floor via a slightly wider base plate with a bolt on each corner. will retain the level sensor from my old tank and integrate it then wire upto the stock fuel gauge.

will probably put the fittings at the back so the only time it will surge away from the pickup is under braking. am running an external electric fuel pump.

    now a few questions:

what do i need to do in the way of a breather system for it?

do i really need a return line with a carby setup or just feed?

any clever ideas for baffles? are they really needed?

are there any foams or anything i should be putting inside?

also, what thickness material would be suitable? i was thinking 2-3mm but maybe more seeing as it will have the weight of 40lt of fuel in it when full.

I dont know specifics on most of those questions but you wont need a return line for a carby setup, however if I was having a tank made Id have a provision for a return line put in. Its a pretty minor extra while the tank is being fabricated, much much more work if you decide to change to an EFI system down the track.

There will be bugger all pressure on the tank so ~3mm walls would be fine. The only thing you might worry about is flex due to the walls being flat. A couple of internal braces takes care of that though. (Your fabricator would know this)

Fuel cell outer box (ie the box that holds the fuel bladder) in a v8supertaxi is folded from 2.0mm ally and they carry 120L of fuel, so 2.0mm should work on yours.

Some of the folds at the top where the lid bolts on probably give it some strength too.

racer industries sells the fuel cell foam. not sure what category/racing you are running, but most serious CAMS events need you to have a cell that is foam filled I think.

im not into the real serious stuff yet but am trying where possible to build the car to be able to, so the foam is probably a good idea.

do u know what its called? i had a look at the racer industries website and couldnt see it.... however we had a rep from a foam company come into work this morning who said he will give me some if i can tell him what type of foam it is. seems hes into historic racing

is the foam to stop fire or surge?

    as will a google:
    http://www.gmpracingproducts.com.au/...r-fuelfoam.php

i thought there wass a fire benefit also

cant for the life of me find out any details on the type of foam tho aside from the odd "poyurethane" comment. maybe any petrol resistant foam works? there is lots of different brands available, and they are all different colors.

If your fabrication guy has experience doing fuel cells surely he will know what youre supposed to use.

well he is called "tanks for trucks" so they do fuel tanks all the time. i just stopped in there to try and buy some material to make my own plenum, it just happend that he was interested in making it for me for about the same i was expecting to pay for material so now he is my general ally fabricator

he has told me $200 will cover a fuel cell.... i think he wanted a drawing ready to go but ill ask him about the breathers etc.

It effectively removes the empty space in the tank so less chance of vapours causing an explosion in an accident. CAMS doesn't really care if you have surge issues.
