    Unhappy Corolla Sportivo turbo issue

    Hey

I need some advice on what to do with my Corolla. On really hot days my car cuts out and turns off. When this happens it takes a minute before the car will start again but then it will go might do it once or twice more and then the car will be ok. Apart from happening on hot days there is no distinct conditions on when it happens. It can happen at any rev range from idle to high revs and in any gear.

I only use 98 octane fuel. The car has been to 4 workshops including a dealership and is still not fixed so i am wondering if anyone knows a good workshop which may be able to diagnose the car.
The car has light mods boost controller, exhaust, standard ecu.

I am located in Sydney and any help will be greatly appreciated. Also i dont care how much the workshop charges i just want my car fixed

If you haven't already, go look on Rollaclub, there have been a couple of AE112 Sportivo owners on there having issues with the ECU, absolute mindfuck of a problem to diagnose in the first place and unless you're under warranty, the ECUs ain't cheap either.

iirc it's cheaper to buy, install and tune a Motec than to get a 112 ecu

    Hi mate,
May be nothing to do with your particular issues, but keep the fuel tank breather system in the back of your mind.
A work mate had endless problems with his VS bogandore and it turned out to be a missing one way valve in the charcoal canister lines. This was allowing the charcoal canister to fill up with fuel and flood the motor at times, particularly with full tank and hot days.

    Cheers,
    Jason

Pretty much, you can buy a whole second-hand 112 Sportivo for less too (although with only 110 of them made, it's rare you'll get two in the one spot)

Stupid question maybe... But, could it be a fuel vapourisation issue? As it only seems to happen on hot days...

Could be a related issue... fuel pressure reg perhaps?

i'm saying that, as my friend has one.. that that was the problem with here, after everyone replaced this and that, and they even borrowed an ecu from another of her friends (same sportivo)

it was the dizzy/coil setup.. so try that.. as there ALOT cheaper than the ecu..

find someone's mum/grandma with an AE112r conquest.. 2 bolts, and a plug later pop thiers out and into yours and test it

Interesting, i'm having a similar issue with my st162 with a beams in it. It just drives a long for a while, then, unpredicatbly, the engine cuts out. Sometimes it will start back up, if you leave it in gear, and continue working. Other times it needs to sit for a while before it will start up.

Unfortunately I can't scan my ecu for codes atm because the plug isn't wired correctly, would any of the mentioned fuel issues show up?

yours could be any number of things...conversions are always a little trickey... a bullet connector between the harness and the motec in my mates 3sgte ST162 was causing that exact symptom.. it was exaggerated by me pressing my foot against the carpet in the footwell (underneath was the wiring) when it spooled and turns the wheels in 3rd gear..

this is a factory issue with the sportivo AE112r's that i have heard about a few times.. so for the cost of peanuts it may well be the same issue..

Exclamation Re: Corolla Sportivo turbo issue

So what exactly has been tried/said/speculated so far by the mechanics/workshops its been to??

I have a thread on RollaClub with relation to this EXACT problem I had with my Sportivo 112 early last year. Mate, poor ROL14 stalled 5 TIMES just getting it on the car trailer (heading to the workshop) after stalling 4 times down the same km stretch of road... That was towards the end when she started doing it ALL THE TIME!!!

SAME symptoms, SAME suggestions made... SAME Questions I was asking... Here's my comments in relation to the issues you're having, thought they might help.

How many k's has the car done?

From research I've done (and I've done a bit about them) this fault seems to kick in at about 130,000-150,000... Which they are getting to now with the age of the model hence why more are becoming apparent I'd suggest

Has the dizzy been removed by anyone and checked yet?As mattysshop said, its worth replacing the dizzy (as its the same as the ascent and conquest dizzy) as a test. We did that with my car... We had to - didn't have anyone to bounce things off who'd been there before... Tried anything we could. Its a cheap test to eliminate that as a potential issue anyways.

Has the computer been removed by anyone yet and checked?

*EDIT: Don't fret my friend. There is a solution that won't set you back the cost of a replacement factory ECU or a motec ECU for that matter!!!

there you are, sorry for the misinformation.. i emailed her to see exactly what it was.. as all i remembered was the dizzy!

so the problem does lie in the ecu, a capacitor needed to be replaced, i'm not sure which one, or if there were multiple ones.. perhaps it's similar to the S/T 20v's swollen/leaking capacitor's that is not unheard of, but not really common?
