Default Series 2 5SFE with no balance shafts?

    I was prepping up a Series 2 5SFE this morning. It is from a ST184 Celica, 1993 I think.
When I took the sump off I was surprised that there was no balance shaft assy. It was my understanding that the balance shaft assy was present in all of the Series 2 motors to combat the very common vibration issues that the earlier ones have.
Its definitely a Series 2 as the other changes are there (different crankcase breather system, ECU, knock sensor, no cold start injector etc). Can anyone clarify what the deal is with this?
It also has no oil cooler which I thought was funny since I have a Series 1 sitting there from a 1990 ST184 that has the oil cooler.

The last 5SFE motor I pulled apart was from a Holden Apollo (not 100% on the year, early 90s) and it had the balance shafts AND the oil cooler. Random

The Balance shaft was never on the Celica only on the Camry/Apollo.

Drive a Celica and you will feel a slight harshness - acceptable in a "Sporty" car but not in a saloon.

A lot of aftermarket repairers also left them out of the Camry's when they did engine rebuilds.

Thats odd isnt it, might be an early changeover model parts-bin-special or something, although you usually wouldnt expect it from Toyota. Nissan often did that around model/series changes, with early model bits in later model vehicles etc.

Even if the aftermarket repairers left the balance shaft assembly out after a rebuild, as toyoda suggested, the crank would still have the big gear on it, unlikely they would go to the effort of machining it off.

Do the engine numbers match? Could be an import bottom end, using the Aus-spec bolt ons etc?

Also note that Toyota quoted different power figures between the Celica and Camry 5SFEs, and I doubt it would be all due to exhaust (not that the Celica exhaust is very sporty)
