Default Tilt function on st184 steering wheel not working

I'm trying to diagnose why the automatic lift steering column on a st184 isn't working.

For those that may not know about this, when you take the keys out of the ignition of a st184 celica the steering wheel will tilt upright. When you want to drive again you lower the steering wheel once the keys are in the ignition.

Mine is holding the KEY IN position. I do prefer it staying in the one position even if the key is in or out but its one of those things i'd like to get working properly.

Any ideas to why its not working please?

    Thanks

Man, this car of yours sounds like a bit of a basket case...

Have you pulled it apart and had a look at the mechanism? Is it mechanical or electronic (like in a Soarer / Aristo)? Sounds like it might just need a clean-up and a bit of grease?

there is a wire that plugs into the release, make sure its plugged in and still producing a current after the ignition is off. check fuses etc.

So if I unplug this wire on mine , the wheel will stay in the downward position?
I hate how the wheel slams upwards when i take the key out.
