    Default 1j power choke

im having some problems with my 1j atm.

the engine seems to almost die at about 2k rpm, it gargles and theres a massive power drop, to the point where i have to put the clutch in and change down or the call will stall. if i step on the throttle when this is happening, it continues to gargle for abit then all of a sudden ( like a flick of a switch) the car has power. but this takes a few seconds to happen.
also when accelerating there is some stutters.

car also blows alot of black smoke with acceleration.

my rear turbo is also abit worse for wear (it screams when on boost), but i will be replacing it soon, dunno if that has something to do with it.

im thinking i will replace the spark plugs and see how it goes?

Sounds like its Running way to Rich, the excessive Black smoke being the indicator ....

Check for codes on the computer ...

Maybe Check the Vacuum hose to the MAP sensor, but if it was off it would run pretty bad even before 2000 as well, certainly worth a look though ..

Do a visual check on the oxy sensor & wires as well, but the codes would show that up though ..

Also Pull off the Vacuum hose to the fuel pressure regulator & make sure that you haven't got any fuel in the hose which will indicate a damaged diaphram ..

There is plenty more that could cause it, but at least its a start ...

also the car has a very low idle, 500 rpm and is hard to start and blows heaps of black smoke on start.

Not sure if this will fix those issues, but there are two things you can try that are relatively cheap.

Firstly, to check codes have a look here - http://www.troublecodes.net/Toyota/

The first fix will be to inspect the ECU for damaged/leaking capacitors and replace them (preferably all) - instructions here

The other will be to inspect the coils for cracks and to add some insulation - the best way to do it is to use liquid insulation and then get the right size heat shrink to go over the top. Just be careful as this may make it to big to fit back in place, but it has been done before correctly so try it out first before making it permanent.

See if those fix your issues but even if they dont, it will prevent any further failure from those areas. As for your idle issue, if you have fixed everything and its still low then you can adjust it manually.

Just remember that many issues have come up before so it would be best to have a search first and then ask questions if you get no where, plus dont restrict your searching to Toymods only.

im having trouble getting the engine light to come up.

theres a whole lot of greyish gunk on the diagnostic unit. good knows how it got there. i dont think it was stopping the connection tho as i push the jumper home.

I've had that grease on the diag ports of both my cars, it seems to be normal and will still work, I used a piece of solder to bridge the ports.

Before doing Injectors, try another ECU since it wont cost you a thing if you can borrow it off a friend.. 1jz ecu's particularly the ones from the JZA70 are well known to cause problems.

Have you checked visually the Map sensor hose & fuel regulator Vacuum hose for fuel that i mentioned earlier on ..

As some of the guys have said it could be the computer, but its certainly worth checking the easy stuff as well ...

    No worries,

Not sure what car you have ? but on a JZZ30 Soarer the Map sensor is mounted on the firewall just behind & above the motor & the vacuum hose runs from the inside of the Intake manifold plenum chamber, the hose comes off a short round black vacuum unit ( suspect its a vacuum dampner ) its located position wise on the motor about 3/4 of the way down the manifold .. follow the hose back to the Map sensor & make sure its all connected & ok & even pull off the hose from the map sensor with the car running & make sure it has vacuum to it ..

The Fuel regulator & vacuum hose is on the very front of the Fuel rail ( front of the motor as well ) pull off the small vacuum hose & check & smell for fuel in the hose, you will see the fuel return hose coming off the same unit ..

    Rob ..
