I haven't been on toymods much for a long time (not really since the change to the new forum), it's interesting to see so many people sticking up for commodores.
Hate to revert to the subject of the thread but I just put a vn s2 v6 in my hilux, $900 for a second hand marks conversion kit, with motor. These early motors are good for the fact that it's not hard to get the wiring sorted and you can pick up one of the thousands upon thousands of motors/cars lying in paddocks and backyards for a carton of beer.
As much as I hated putting in a non toyota motor it, it was a far cheaper option and made the most sense. I'm picking up another early 80s petrol 4wd hilux soon so if anyone knows of a better conversion choice let me know.
good to see that some things never change, people still think kingmick is a fuckwit.

I'm talking bang for buck, I'd love to slot in a 1uz but can't justify the money.

if anyone has a complete hilux conversion kit complete with a 1uz for $900 I'll be more than happy to take it off of their hands.
In the small country town I live in there would have to be at least 3 or 4 people with vn wrecks lying around, not too many soarers and crowns though. The ecotecs require a bit more screwing around to get them running in other vehicles.

Wow that Mr89cressida guy has some issues huh? I have to agree that whilst i dotn favour the ford or holden's i wouldnt blanket them as "ALL" crap. I bet if someone offered him a brand new FG F6 with a 310kW trubo six donk in it for nothing he would take it. I know i would. As for them all being garbage all cars have their gremlins. But it comes down to how well maintained the vehicle is and how much "rough" treatment it gets. My bro when working for holden actually believed the LS1 engine had more problems when its "babied" around than when it gets a regular workout.
If you dont look after a car its going to have problems end of story. However if you get it serviced regularly and fix problems if they occur you shoudl minimise problems. I too have a friend with a VP commodore six cylinder it has nearly 600 thousand kays on it now and its onyl issue is the auto trans is a bit sloppy and the paints letting go. And i've seen taxi's with ford 6's with nearly a million kays on the clock and the driver has only replaced the trans once and had a head done once thats pretty good in my opinion.
I've gotten in trouble on here before for blanket opinions but this guy really takes the cake. You might not like the car but in reality there are some good cars out there from both companies. Ford focus is a great littel car to drive so is the new fiesta. I quite liked mums vectra 6 cylinder as well when she had it. All in all i think you need to look at your own car and the history adn reputation the 7M has with BHG's and ask yourself was the ford or holden engine of the time mroe or less reliable?

Yes and they didnt actually have a reputation for blowing head gaskets like the 7M did their trannys where more of an issue when the still used the 3 speed once the 4 speed was used they where ok. They might have been shitboxes but they where fairly reliable and when the 7M debuted ford where still using the 250 Xflow anyhow the EA didnt come out till 88 the 7M was about what 85? maybe earlier I struggle to think of an engine as dependale as a standard 250 Xflow is honestly (awaits a bunch of responses about dependable motors). in MPFI or carby trim they where solid as hell.

7M was mid/late 86 in the MA70 and late 88 in the MX83

yeah as i thought. I know ford and holden dont have a rep for high HP per litre in the 6's (until recently that is) compared to Japanese and european eqivalents but their aim in that era wasnt to build high revving hi HP 6 cyl's it was reliability and torque. If you wanted HP in a holden you bought a V8 and in the ford well u where shit outta luck you got a reliable engine that had the power of 6 with the economy and torque of a V8 (nearly) at the time the rocket ship fords where your TX3's and TX5's in turbo form. The fact that ford could make a 4 litre (which really is large for a petrol 6) and ONLY get around the 175-200HP mark was a bit of a joke however when u see that its got over 300nM of torque with that power it feels more powerful than it is. The funny thing is when the XR's came onto the scene in the early 90's the tickford motor EB/ED XR6 had around 165kW and the windsor 5 litre V8 only had around 20kW more (but a stack of torque) makes u realise jsut how usable the torquey 4.0 litre six was just a shame it was in a fat ass like the falcon. I often wonder what say a TF cortina or XD falcon might go like if you shoe horned say a BF falcon turbo 6 into them....

Once the P Platers begin writing the XR6 Turbo's off, We'll be seeing LOTS of conversions into older cars, maybe somebody could consider ford power in their Toyota?
hrmmmm F6 motor in A80?
interesting concept.... 310kW 500+ nM torque
Its a fairly large motor would it even fit in a Z20? now that would be fun
