alot of these sensor are "looked at" but aren't used in the operation of the a/c,although im not saying that with 100% confidence though as every system is different.
Hello,
On my Soarer GZ20 I have what looks to be an Ambient air sensor near the front grille, not the one in the cabin. Since my GZ20 workshop manual is all in Japanese, I had a look at the MK3 TSRM, and I couldn't find any info on what the Ambient Sensor does, it's only listed under the Air conditioning part, but no information is given about it.
I was thinking that it triggers A secondary fan near the radiator to help pull more air through the A/C condensor if the ambient air is too high. To test this with the A/C On, I used a lighter to heat up the ambient sensor, however the fan did not turn on. I don't think it's anything ECU related as this sensor isn't apart of any ECU looms.
Any thoughts?
Thanks.

You mean they are connected but don't affect any functions of the a/c system or climate control system?
Its used as part of the calculation for working out the position of the Air damper over the evaporator.
TAO ( Temperature Air Outlet ) = Temperature set -Temperature room - Temperature Ambient - Temp Solar.
I have left out the constants that are in between each temp but you will get the idea.
Toyoda
As said above, its an air temp sensor so that the climate control ecu knows approximately what temperature the air coming into the cabin is, and adjusts the heater damper and valve to suit.
Every Toyota with 'auto climate control' since the early 80's (and possibly before?) has one.
