When you have no speed wires I found that mine just hunted between gears a LOT, and was very hesistant to change into overdrive.
SPD is the wire from the dash to the ecu (it should be already behind the glovebox, L-W from *memory*)
SP2 is the sensor on the back of the gearbox.
yeah, that is exactly what mine did and what adams does.. so its definitely missing a speed wire..

awesome.. should be an easy fix.. thanks heaps guys..

    Hi,

Like I said, from looking at Toyodiy, it seems that 3rd Gen 1g-gte's had the auto controlled by the Engine ECU, where as other gens had a separate controller.

    Thanks.

    Although mine's a 1ggze it's still most likely the same configeration as it was also from a GX81. It's a 3rd Gen from a 1988 Model.
I had the same problem but overcame it by fitting the actual speedo from the GX81 to my car and connecting the appropriate wire from the ECU to the speedo.
No gearbox speed sensor required and solved problem immediately
Another bonus is that the Km's on the speedo now reflect what has been done by the Engine
