thanks for all the replies guys.

i was getting ready to clean inside the motor this morning and have come to the conclusion that its not worth fixing. the plan was jsut to slap a set of bearings in it and linish the 1 worn crank journal however whilst trying to fit the cap back onto #4 rod i have realised just how fucked it is. rod journal is out of round by around 1mm and the crank journal by at least .5mm. add to that the rod being slightly bent (cap not going on now) and its just too much work for a motor that was only going to do a couple more meets while the new one is built. cbf pulling the crank out and the head off.

so i will scrap this one for parts and keep moving ahead with the 5m/7m hybrid square motor.

I found the easiest way to clean galleries is with a compressed air kero gun ($20 from bunnings), and fill with white spirit, blows a lot of shit out and leaves a residue free clean.

But hey, the motors now a shitter so no matter....

probably best to leave that rod and piston out. Remember to grind the cam lobes off for that cylinder or you'll have a massive crankcase to inlet/crankcase to exhaust leak. Should get you across the Nullarbor.
