Default How to clean inside a motor that has eaten a bearing?

i have decided to put a set of bearings in the ole 7m to get it back in the car while i build the new motor for it..... wanna get back out on the track!

this is the bearing in question:

all the bits on the magnet were found in the sump/oil when i pulled it out, obviously there will still be sheetloads of it in the oil galleries etc.

the motor is still fairly assembled, sump is off and all bearing caps however i am hoping to leave the crank in the block so i dont have to fuck around with the timing belt & front/rear seals etc. head is still on but i will pull the rocker covers off for the clean.

my initial plan was to blow compressed air though all the oil galleries from the head and underside of the block, then follow this up with some sort of cleaning agent (petrol, metho, kero, turps).
what is best to use here?

i am planning, once its back in the car to buy 3 bottles of cheap/shit oil and filters, start and run it for a minute or so, drop the oil, run it for 5 minutes, drop the oil then maybe 10 mins and drain that oil too before filling up with decent oil again.

i have a couple of s/h oil pumps here so will probably just stick one of those in as the old one will be full of crap. obviously not plumb up the cooler until the final oil change.

i am also slightly concerned about a blockage in the cranks oil passage, #4 bearing is the one that disappeared and there was a pool of shinies on the #5 bearing right under the oil hole. just run compressed air though all the holes?

If you know how many times you will need to replace things like bearings, etc, then you can budget that against doing it properly by stripping it right down and cleaning it fully.
If you don't know how many times you'll have to pull the engine out to fix something that's been destroyed by floating crap then it'll be hard to plan a budget.

    </sarcasm>
Pull the engine apart and do it properly.

I think you should have posted that "solution" in the "dodgy shit I have done to cars" thread.

Strip the motor, $40 hot tank and do the job correctly.

i am building another motor but due to budget constraints it will take time and i want to do it right rather than rush to get the car going again.

if i strip this motor down i will be tempted to waste money on it that is better spent on the new one.

this motor is likely to only see 2 or 3 more race meetings and its not going to get thrashed....i dont need/expect it to last forever!

I thought you were going to suggest putting a hole in the side of the block to clean the bearing material timtams!

ahh if thats what your bearing looks like, i think i would be more worried of the condition of the crankshaft journel and actual conrod tunnel and weather they are both within spec still!

    rod end is decent too.

timtams, good to hear it has worked. did you use some petrol or similar inside to flush out the galleries?

I actually used diesel and compressed air. Wear goggles. Diesel hurts

    Sure about that??????
The material missing from the bearings & journals is in the sump & pickup & pump & relief valve & gallery going to the filter, no where any further. It is also stuck on the sides of the crankcase & bottoms of the pistons where it was flung out by the rods.
    Most of it wasn't magnetic.
If you cannot clean it well/completely, then I'd leave it alone rather then removing some & loosening up all the rest.
