i can confirm that dodgy ballast resistor will mean car won't run/idle smoothly without encouragement. happened when i swapped the dissy/coil/ignitor in the crown.

Can be dodgy resistor, but more often it is incorrect wiring.

There are a lot of connections to be made on the celica coils, with many similar/same coloured wires, and mixing them up means problems.

In short, there are 4 terminals:

    coil+
    coil-
    ballast 1
    ballast 2

coil - should go to the points.
coil + should go to ballast 2 as well as have a second wire that gives 12V at crank
Ballast 2 should go to coil+ (as above)
Ballast 1 should go to ign from key.

Edit: there is also a tacho wire on the coil - post.

    IIRC,

    - Ignition feed to Ballast 1 should be blk/yel
    - Start signal to Coil + should be white
    - Tach signal and wire to points (both on coil -) should be blk.

But what it can do is burn out the coil. Original coils aren't up to handling full batt voltage for hours upon hours, will get bloody hot and can overheat. The ballast resister drops it back to about 6V over the coil in all situations except start.

Modern coils can often handle full voltage continuously.

Faarrrrrkkkkkkkk!!!!!!!.........went and picked up my green celica this morning to prep it for tomorrow......driving it back to my place the temp gauge kept going up.......pretty much hit red as I just got it home......thought it may be a gunked up radiator so ducked off to Repco and got some radiator flush and some coolant.......flushed and cleaned it about 5 times until it was running clean water....filled it with coolant and then took it for a drive again...same thing!.........so as it stands I ain't up for tomorrow......SHIT!........got 2 Celicas and neither will be able to make it........have fun everyone and I hope the weather stays ok......i look forward to seeing the photos.

    Correcto...

I was lucky enough that both were against me that day.

corrected the wiring first, then found dodgy resistor.

    Hi Adam,

If the Ballast resistor is hot i would suggest its actually working & possibly ok, sounds like possibly you have some shit in the carby, quickest way i would suggest is to start up the engine with the air cleaner off & give it a few descent rev's & as its coming down from some high rev's get a rag & choke / smother the carby completely, pull the rag off before it stalls & try that a few times, ( you will need to give it a few rev's in between to clean out the over fuelled engine ) depending on how bad it is it usually works to suck the shit through the carby jets ..

have you looked at the thermostat sounds to me that its not opening, if thats the case the car will run without it, it will just take longer to warm up, not good long term but good enough as a quick fix.

Wiring to ballast resistor is fine as it was never messed with... the problem has arisen from the 3 years of sitting not running.

I replaced the ballast resistor just out of interest and it made no difference, as did a new set of plugs. Didn't do points as I can't find my measuring thingys.

Spewing as all I have left to do is bleed the brakes.. if I could just get it to run it would be happy days.

I will go try the rag trick to see if that makes a difference.
