    Default under car surge tanks

it has been brought to my attention that due to the 9000 odd RPM my AE86 will see i should upgrade the fuel system a bit.
now at the moment it has a V6 camry/avalon pump in the tank, but being a carbie tank before it has no baffleing (a proper JDM tank is hard to find and expensive). so on 1/4 tank and less on hard-ish cornering it gets fuel surge (when it was this low and just puttering about town you can drive around it).
the current pump is fine and no issues, but its not powerful enough to supply for the high revs fuel consumption it will have.
fuel lines were already upgraded ages ago when i did the engine conversion, we worked on the basis that if i did it then ill never have to upgrade in the future.

so im looking for a surge tank. it must be underneath the car.
at the moment ive spoken to and looked at one a guy has made on the AE86 forums and its a pretty good bit of gear it mounts under the car pretty easily and is rectangular and 1.6ltrs in capacity. its $150 currently.

my question is: is there any other ones i should look at? would it be better to go for a larger capacity IE 2ltrs?

obiviously a new external pump will be used, so assume its a bosch or walbro (hell maybe even a VL commo one)

motor: hi-comp smallport, arp rod bolts, head studs, 272cams, ITB's etc, mostly going to be for circuit work and the odd spirited drive.

to make the hotlinks, highlight the word you want to use, click the 'insert link' button at the top of the text box when you're writing a post. Looks like a planet with an infinity symbol underneath. Then paste the link into the dialogue box

If you can get a good one, designed for the application, for $150, that sounds pretty good.

I've used a 0.7L surge tank under the rear end of my Sprinter. Got it from Speed Technology/EFI hardware back in the day. It is designed for underfloor since the large outlet is furthest away from the mounting flange. Worked fine ever since. I think huge surge tanks are just for bragging rights and if your lift pump is reasonably sized you really don't need a very big tank at all.

A decent lifter pump, any surge tank you can find that will fit and a VL EFI pump will be easy, cheap and satisfy the engeine's fuel needs.

Found a link to the tank I use

I need a working 4AGE bottom end. Pref smallport GZE, but all others considered. Also complete motors.
Drift Volvo. Was fun. 2JZ next time.

size of surge tank depends on power you're going to put out and size of lift pump.

you basically want to make sure your surge tank can fuel your engine on WOT for the length of whatever the longest straight is you're going to push it down, allowing for whatever the lifter can supply.

Personally I'd prefer to have a lifter that can supply enough fuel for the engine at full gas (admittedly I've only ever dealt with relatively low power cars), so the surge tank will only start to empty if the lift pump isn't picking up fuel.

Your lift pump should *always* flow more than enough for the engine at WOT.
Having one too small is just asking for problems.

    thanks guys.

the current intank pump (will be lift pump) is a camry v6/avalon pump which is more than enough to supply fuel for WOT on the track before, and now. ive never had an issue with it supplying fuel and is a very common swap (besides the VL fuel pump) when doing a 4age conversion in ADM AE86.

so with the surge tank and some external fuel pump (bosch or VL) i reckon should be good to go. so think i thats answered all my questions...

Is it O/K to use the current high pressure pump as a lift pump. You would have to ensure your have a return from the surge tank back to the main tank. Also I was going to do as you sugest but was unsure of the life of a high pressure pump being used as a lift pump - no back pressure and limited discharge pressure. Could also have some cavitation problems.

its no high pressure pump, just standard toyota pump for 6cyl engine..

basically as long as the fuel going into the tank is at a regular rate similar to whats being pumped out it shouldnt be an issue.
