    Default 1ggze + w58 into ra28

Here is my situation. I depend on my celica as my daily drive. The timing chain on the 18rc has started to rattle and i'm not prepared to pay $$ to fix it up (i'm a student). My friend just so happens to have an ra23 project with a 1ggze and w58 in it, and doesn't have enough money to follow it through. So we've decided to sell the ra23 shell and whack the 1g into my car.

The sump and engine crossmember have been modified already so that takes some work out of it. I also think I've got a flywheel for it, but i need to get that confirmed. I'm hoping, with the help of my friend, to wire it all up ourslelves (we've got a bunch of wiring diagrams with it)

Considering my low finances, and the need for the car on a daily basis, i'm thinking of just dropping the engine in without upgrading the suspension, brakes or diff (yet!). I'm no hoon at heart and I mostly drive like a granny to go easy on the fuel, so i'm figuring it won't hurt to go around on these stock parts for a little while. When i get some more money I'll do the old corona strut etc upgrade. I'm not even thinking about engineers certs yet, my rego ends in dec.

Would this void my 3rd party insurance if i'm in an accident?
    Anyone with advice?

I'll be swapping the engines in the next few weeks so i'll try and post some pics.

    cheers

Yeah, if you're driving an unapproved modified car and you have some sort of accident... if the insurance company finds out, then your insurance is void. A lot of people take that risk, and a lot of ppl think it's stupid. You've gotta decide for yourself.

As for the swap, mounting the package is actually not a big job. The other stuff you should do in the rusty shell to make the swap easier is:

    Tailshaft
    Wiring
    Exhaust
    Cooling system
    Intercooler
    Fuel system

If you're doing it yourself with the right tools, you'll find that the mounting takes about 1 weekend... all the other stuff will take about 5. And that is doing it hastily.

    thanks timbo,

With regards to intercooling, would i need to if i was just want to run everything stock? Or are you referring to changing the radiator?

What will i need to do with the tailshaft, i don't suppose its as simple as using the stock one?

I've got a pretty good bunch of tools, any specific ones that i'll be needing?

    cheers

No tools that are really specific Mate, just the usual.

Yeah, you can run the stock tailshaft if you choose to run the stock diff and mount the engine/gearbox in the right spot.

I guess I was thinking more along the lines of a 1G-GTE, where you will need to intercool. I've got no experience with the GZE, so I don't know what they need.

Before i go ahead on this i'd like to get together a budget. I have $1200 to get it in and running, cheap and dodgy. I'm wondering if I can afford it.

From what i've been reading from the other conversions i'm going to need at the very least

    fuel pump
    lift pump
    surge tank
    hoses, banjo fittings etc
    thermo fan
radiator ( can i use stock?)
    MISC

If anyone else can add to this, and give me a rough estimate for each that would be great. I have a feeling that there will be a very expensive MISC category lol.
    cheers

You can't use the stock radiator. It will be too close to the s/c clutch. I used a Ford Laser KA/KB radiator, mounted on the outside of the stock location (ie forward) and had the top pipe relocated to line up with the thermostat. Top hose is straight, length cut to suit, bottom hose is an EA Falcon one, cut to suit to get around the air-cond compressor.
    Thermo fan for sure.
I modded the stock fuel tank with a MX32 fuel pick-up and had a well welded into the bottom of the tank. Then fitted an hi-pressure external pump (lower than the tank). Did not need lift pump and surge tank as a result. Would recommend fitting a larger diameter fuel line from the pump to the engine.
