Default Corona RT 142 Gearboxes - titles? stats? specs?

    Hey all.

My 1985 RT142 is auto. And I want it to stay auto. I'm running standard 22 RE

However - it's getting a bit 'clunky' when changing some gears up or down (this is 3 spd with overdrive).

Also, when a bit cold, it has trouble changing up to third and it likes to rev right out before it kicks over...this only happens when it is cold though.

There are no transmission leaks that I can see, and the fluid levels have been fine for at least the last 9 months or so.

Please help me by answering these questions:

1 )What is the model/make etc of my gearbox (those that are standard in the RT142 Corona? My trans/axle plate stamp is BLANK under the bonnet, which makes this obviously hard.

    2) What parts of my gear box do all of these ill symptoms point to? (If there is something obvious)

    3) What do you recommend. What else Toyota is interchangeble with this box - is it nothing? Or does it need attention.

I use the car for cruising and I plan to use it for light towing (long distance).

    Let me know!

So far all I can find is that it must be a W55 or W58? What does this mean, is this accurate? Where can I get more info?

I dare not say that it is an A43D auto the same used in the MX 62 Cressida and MS 112 Crown.I had the same problem as yours when I had my MX 62 Cressie.I had the car for 4yrs and it always did it but never worried about it.
    Cheers Brett.

it wont be a w55 or w58 as these are manual boxes.

just give it a service with fresh fluid and filter and dont worry to much about it, as long as its not slipping badly you'll be fine

    Hi,

3 speed auto... that vintage.. probably is an A43D.

The bands probably need adjusting, plus a bit of an overhaul and clean-up. Just get the box serviced. They are a tough box and its just wear and tear and age that's taking its toll. If you get another auto box you take the risk it may be as bad or worse.. so, if it was me, I'd get it serviced and it will keep you going for another 20 years.
