Oh dear. Cracked front end of crank after only 700 km.
Just use the 7M crank after reading through the 27 pages of threads.

dont want to read the whole thing, but WTF is this mean to refer to?
It looks like it just broke at the weld, so I think the block and everything else will be ok.

long story short - he got the front of the 7M crank (for the crank pulley) welded to the front of the 5m crank. After giving it a little beating, it broke off at the weld. I think he was hoping not to have stuffed the whole engine, as sort of a consolation prize for braking the crank which he spent ages trying to sort out.
well thats just retarded

Yep, people also do the same to fit ford cranks in their 202's.
just finished reading that b4 it was posted up here, there will be no welding of the crank for me lol.
my preffered option will be to make the 7m head bolt on to the 5m block....we shall see soon!!
and yes it will be getting ported/cams etc no matter what bottom end it goes on. will also get head studs, balance, blueprint, big comp etc
well i have got my new 5m-e sitting under the carport and got the head off. (cheers riley!!)
aside from 1 major issue this is looking quite do-able. all the head bolt holes line up and all the oil galleries look to be the same. all the 5m block water jackets are present in the 7m head, however the 7m has the extra little triangle drains in between each bore. i have had a *quick* gander at the 5m block and it looks like it will not be a big issue to drill these into it as it the water jackets all seem to go into a common area in the block.
biggest issue at this stage will be spinning the cams as the 5m-e is a chain driven system and obviously the 7m is belt. i have no problem adapting the belt crank & oil pump wheels on however the timing area in the chain block is all open to get oil to the chain, and the belt needs to stay dry.
my 2 options at this stage look to be either a) get a 5m-ge short block (pretty sure these are belt driven)
or b) make a blanking plate for the front of motor to keep oil in where it should be and just run seals on the crank/oil pump pulleys. this would be very simple until i get up the top, as the head will then overhang the front of the block and need something to collect the oil from its front drain and send it back down behind the blanking plate.
i also have a 7m-gte short block coming, which will allow me to see more of what is needed in the front of motor for a belt system. my 7m currently still has the head and harmonic balancer on so i cant do any measurements or anything. once ive got this ill post up some pics of the 2 side by side and throw it up for a brainstorm!!
in related news my cam bloke has said he may be able to get 9.5mm lift and possible 280 duration from grinding my stock 7m cams WOOT! will be a screamer thats for sure![]()
just remove the entire front on the 7M and attach to your 5M block
ah cool, i have not had the 7m bottom apart for ages..... i was thinking the front cover was just the alloy plate that hides the bottom part of the belt. i had a quick flip through the engine manual and can see now that its in 2 parts, so fingers crossed i can just bolt the whole lot on and not have to make anything up.
WOO HOO this is looking fairly possible and not too difficult to actually make work!

if the 5m crank is shorter, you might have trouble getting the timing gear on.
Hi Andrew.
No doubt you have seen this thread on Supramania.

amichie you are a fucking legend!!
always coming through with the goods
i now have something to read over lunch, i havent seen this one yet. only the semi fail which was posted here earlier
edit: looking at the date its pretty recent too, hopefully i can get in contact with the bloke as this is almost exactly what i am trying to build.
well i got the crank out of the 5m last night, was interested to see that a) the crank was stamped 2M and b) #1 bearing was wider than the others, just like the 7m. crank is not as "tidy" in its casting as the one in my other motor (6m crank)
big end bearings were tired however the mains look almost new.
looks like i will be getting the 7m-gte bottom end this weekend so i can start looking at the front cover setup etc and hopefully start to dummy up the hybrid long motor and see if its all going to fit and what the compression will be etc
whats wrong with this picture lol
