Default ae92/ae101 gze pistons the same?

I've been reading that the late model AE92 have all the good stuff such as ceramic coated pistons and stronger conrods.

The EPC confirms the different conrod part numbers but the part numbers for the pistons are the same between the two engines.

So are the pistons the same or not?

If they are the same toyota part number, then they are identical.

ae92 gze pistons are 8.0:1 and ae101 are 8.9:1 and the ae101 have the cut outs for the oil squirters and ceramic coated tops. Ae92 gze have the strongest rods, the 101's are smaller.
both pistons use 20mm wrist pins.
i dont have a funny or cool signature.

With the major exception being 89+(from memory) ae92 gze also using a 8.9:1 piston...

ive "heard" about the 8.9:1 ae92 gze's, but ive never seen any.
not saying its not true, just all the ae92 dli models ive seen have been 8:1, bigport and only map/smallport have been 8.9:1 (ae101)

From the information I've been able to gather the early AE92 is the AFM version. It's the one with 8.0:1 compression pistons and bigport head.

The late model AE92 gze is the MAP based version. It has the 8.9:1 compression pistons, oil squirters and coated pistons and smallport head.

AE101 gze is MAP based and also has 8.9:1 compression pistons, oil squirters and coated pistons? and smallport head.

Information seem to differ everywhere I look. Every now and then I read that the ae101 pistons is not coated but the EPC confirms that the late model ae92 and ae101 have the same pistons.

But which ae92 have the stronger rods? Is it the early model or the late model?

the AE92 rods are the same,

    the AFM has the 8:1

    the MAP version the 8.9:1

if your thinking about buying brand new 4azge genuine pistons, i would seriously consider the much better aftermarket forgies instead.. not a lot of price difference..

Opinions seem to go apart concerning the rods. Some people say they are bigger some say they are not. I found this thread where there's a picture of different 4ag rods.
I recognize the late smalltop rod. I have them in my ae101 gze engine.
I was thinking I could buy the stronger rods instead but I don't know from what engine they come The picture says late bigport/early smallport. That's why I figured ae92.

And yes I was thinking about buying new pistons. I was quoted $90 AUD (no tax) per piston from Toyota.

If you know of some good stronger aftermarket pistons please let me know.
The same goes for the rods. If you know of any stronger aftermarket rods please let me know.

I don't want to lower the compression ratio or anything. Just looking stronger internals but I can't afford to spend $1000.

afm ae92 gze rods are bigger than the map/small port gze version. i think aw11 gze conrods are the same as afm ae92 gze.

i like the stock ae101gze pistons but they are a bit heavy, the afm ae92 rods are massive but are heavy aswell.

ive been using spool conrods, just get them resized and checked before you fit them.

the late model ae92 gze must have the ae101 motor in it.

The spool conrods isn't overly expensive. They are also weigh ~50 gram less than my stock rods. Guess I could afford those
Btw, what do you mean getting them resized? Doesn't spool build them to the correct size from factory?

Still need new pistons though... Know of any 8.9 compression pistons?

yeh but they need to be checked for sizing and alignment and all will be good.

if i wasnt using 101gze pistons, i was going to use JE forged pistons with ceramic coated tops but they were around $1600 for the set (at the time).
i am pretty happy with the toyo pistons tho, they're just heavy and not as stong as a forged piston but a good tuner can make anything work.
ive tryed aries and fked them but that was with a bad tuner so i dont know what they would have been like.

I found a kit with spool conrods and wiseco forged pistons for $1450 USD. Any experience with those pistons?

Arias doesn't seem to make 81mm (standard size) pistons. I think I'll be getting Wiseco pistons.
The Wiseco pistons have a higher CR 10.2-11.8 depending on gasket thickness.

The Arias pistons are oversized and they have lower CR pistons for turbo applications (I'll be using my s/c) but the lower CR pistons also have a flat top whereas their higher CR pistons have a dome top.

I don't know the shape of the Wiseco pistons but does that really matter? Can I just buy any 4AG pistons, a gasket to bring the CR to stock 8.9 and be happy about it?

e-mail wiseco and ask if you can machine the top of 10.2 piston down to 8.9:1. (you should be able to or machine the piston down to 9.5:1 then use a bigger gasket to get close to 8.9:1)
1450 usd sounds a little expensive for here but might be a good price for where you are.
