security in the ecu ?
Dave
I'm doing a BEAMS conversion into an RA28 Celica. I have the the engine cranking, alternator wired up, and whats left of the wiring loom plugged into the ECU. The ECU takes four plugs, two from the engine loom (unmolested and simply pluged into the ECU), and two from the body loom - these plugs were missing from the conversion, so I've sourced two 2JZGTE VVTi plugs to use (plugs are a direct fit, but the pining within the plugs are different). I've gone through an Altezza wiring diagram and have supplied 12volts to the pins requiring power in the "E Connector" and earthed out the appropriate wires too.
While I'm not totally convinced on the replacement plug wiring (it still needs attention for everything to work as it should), I was hoping to have the engine fire with how it's currently set up, to no avail. I have fuel set at 62 psi as per factory setting, and good cranking speed.
Pulling a plug reveals no spark, so I went in search of an ignitor only to find information telling me these engines don't run an ignitor (toyodiy.com). I'm hamstrung by the fact I also don't have the factory Altezza ECU/relay/fuse boxes either - all I have to play with are the 2 engine loom ECU plugs, 3 additional engine loom electrical plugs near the ECU plugs, the two replacement "loom to ECU" plugs and 3 sundry Loom plugs (also from the 2JZGTEVVTi section bought to source the loom ECU plugs.
Any help in working out how these late model ECU's operate and control spark would be greatly appreciated - I'm trying desperately to have it "finished" for freight to Toyfest by Tuesday Afternoon?!
security in the ecu ?

nope, no security.
does it run a crank angle sensor?... possibly faulty?
I thought the later coil on plug jobbies used an integral igniter.
Pretty sure the 3UZ I have here does anyway. Not sure about the BEAMS 3SGE.
Multimeter, check wiring again and again coupled with a shedload of patience.
Clint,
you could try the altezza forums for an answer as well... not alot of beams motors in them here - but heaps in NZ and alot of those guys are on there. mind you, i don't know how much they know about their cars, but may still be worth a shot.
Cheers

It starts on about coil on plug with built in igniters about halfway down page 14. Whilst cranking you might be able to see a blip of voltage off your IGT1 through to IGT4. It'll be easier to see if you have a scope.
If the ecu is indeed powering up you might be able to get an idea of what isn't working via the check connector, but I have a feeling that it's not the morse code type of blinks it used to be. You might need a real scan tool opposed to the traditional paperclip scan tool.
The spanner in my avatar is actually a 16mm, that's why it's still new
The B/T's run individual coilpacks on plug, with the ignitor (coil driver) built in.
Check you have 12V on one of the common wires between all four (think it is Black-White), and ground on the other common wire (think it is White-Black). It's tough to guess from here, but maybe you could be missing the coil earth on the engine.
If you have a good 12V and GND, then it could be a multitude of things. Get Lauren to call me and I'll give it a go over the phone.

does the engine have a crank angle sensor at all?.. if thats faulty it wont provide spark to any of the coilpacks
just thought id ask incase you were still having trouble
Silly question, do the coil packs have 12V with the ignition on and a good ground?
I got a SXE10 ECU diagram that might help. it shows 4 wires going to each one of the coil packs and 2 wires from each running back to the ecu.
cant upload coz its too big. send me a pm with your email if you want it.

The spark problem was fixed. Ended up being a few missing relays that needed to be wired in.

Relays didnt end up being problem for me, I hadnt fed ign switch 12 v to plugs and injectors, silly me.
Funny how things don't work with a fuel pump relay and efi relay
I'd hate to see half the conversions done around the world hehehehehehhe
