Default General Question about 18rg Conversion..

I have an ra23 18rc,an 18rgeu and extractors. Does the conversion require engineering in NSW? I know this has come up before as i've been reading posts but there are alot of variations in answers. I originally was under the impression that it would not require engineering due to lack of modifications required to fit engine and its capacity.

The reason i ask is that i am on my Green P's and according to RTA i cannot drive a vehicle with a performance modification that requires engineering.
I did read in another post that someone couldn't use extractors as it is a performance mod.

I've also read about doing the head swap to the stock 18rc bottom but the bottom end on the 18rgeu is in better condition.

Sorry for the essay, any help would be appreciated.

    just do it..

i am also on my p's (reds) my celica has had an 18RG swap with extractors i dont have any documentation in regards to engineering or anything from the rta concerning a engine swap.

with a car this old the police dont know what was stock or what is original. i usually hit them up with the excuse of sorry officer i could not find a stock OEM part from 1976 so i had to use the next best thing. its worked everytime ive used it not once out of the 4 times ive been pulled over for a general car inspection have i had a problem with the extractors.

the main thing is to sound like a down to earth normal human being not a big headed hoon who thinks highly of themselves, give them the respect they want and they will be on your side.

othwise chuck that rubbish 18rc out and throw that nice power horse 18rg in. i highly doubt you would have a problem with it from the rta or and police
    Cheers, Alex

Yeah, you're replacing an 18R with another 18R so it's pretty unlikely you'll get caught out even if it is technically not allowed without engineering. Who's going to know that car didn't come with a twincam head from the factory?

i had a few head scratching moments with the RN41 'tufflux' with the 18RG...

a cop pulled me over, poped the bonnet and he just smiled.. he said he was expecting a tough escort, or a datto 1600 coming around the corner... then he saw me in the hilux and just had to have a look..

there nice enough people if you just treat them like a normal person

Change the engine over, ring the RTA and change the engine number (they both have 18R##... eng numbers), then your car will be registered with the 18R-G.

    Easy.

let the RTA think its an 18r. which it is. don't mention twin cam or any EFI, if it has got it.
    should be fine.
the only problem you'll get if they go further with the enquiry, is to get a CO readings.(emissions readings)
That can be managed at some Ultra tune shops easily.
