Base plate is moving around. Happens to the occasional Toyota distributor.

is your measurement in MM or inches?
i've always set the gap in my old Toyota's to 0.45mm, all Denso dizzy's.
maybe your points gap, if you measure in MM is way to close.

measurement is inches, tried .45mm but still no go, by base plate do you mean bottom section? Had a quick look and everything seems firm.

Yeah the round plate that the points attach onto. I had one many years ago have the top & bottom parts start to come apart a little when driving.
A good figure for setting the points gap to get it going is 0.017".

base plate seems to be cast and not bolted in so shouldnt move, also if I leave car for a few mins it will magically start again.
Have replaced leads, rotor, cap, coil and points.

It should move - that's how the vacuum advance works.
A bit puzzled as to why sorry.

if you wiggle your distributor rotor as to move the gear on the end of the dizzy does it feel like theres alot of play between the gears?.. or is it nice and tight?

Shaft play, vacuum adv. play, or just rubbing block wear from rust on the cam or even initial wear-in of a poorly finished rubbing block.
Is the rubbing block parallel with the cam?

Do you mean there is no mechanical/centrifugal advance on this dizzy, that's pretty rare for something with points???

no im talking bout the gear at the end of the dizzy thats run by the cam (or what ever internal gear on the hilux doesnt have to be the cam) sometimes they slightly wear and the timing gets thrown out.. i thought maybe if he wiggled the rotor button while the dizzy is still installed in the engine he could tell how much play is in the gears....i wasnt talking bout the advance on the dizzy at all

looks like problem is solved, new points I purchased are defective
mate had a 2nd set so I threw them in and she kicked over and is running sweet, still takes a few attempts to kick over but at least its running.
Have gap set to .015inch and seems to be okay, would it better to close it up a bit or open the gap more to get it running a little crisper?
thanks for all the responses guys

    Glad you got it sorted
You need to find an old box that can measure dwell timing, and from my rusty memory you need something like 90° for a four cylinder engine. Been nearly 20 years since I ran anything with points .....
