I share similar thoughts about gapless rings actually, they dont seem to be a problem if the engine is loaded instantly e.g. Run in on engine dyno with preheated oil and water tanks to minimise warm up time but otherwise are a bit painful.

Anyhow still i very good price at that,
JE customs set of 6 is close to the same price you got 8 x X-forgings for

hey ed, would you remove the edges on the tops of those pistons they seem pretty sharp. ?

actually, up close you can see that the crowns have been hand finished with a grinder. but yeah, they could do with a little extra finishing. im thinking about getting the crowns ceramic coated too, but not really sure of the cost/benefit ratio there

i was going to get some coated but i was told that most places that do ceramic coating do it too thick (for the combustion side of things ) and it comes off, chips away, and was told the best coating you can get is normaly done in house from the piston manufacturer. Maybe things have changed, but at the time i didnt want to risk it.

a cooler piston is a happy piston , every bit helps.

Informed by a ceramic coater it's a lot more beneficial in boosted engines, cost vs. gains in a NA engine isn't worth it.
The above opinion is just that - my opinion. It is not shared by any business that I am currently or have previously been involved with, nor any of their employee's.

heh...... I'm not expert, but recently had a few similar issues

    1) concerning the pins.... it depends on how long you want/need this engine to run. I went through this a few months back looking for light weight pins for a stock piston. I found that the stock pins had a mass of 89 grams... light weight steel was 64 grams... and titanium were 44 grams. Problem is the titanium would eventually gaul(30k+ miles)

    2) be careful about ceramic coatings... they are great, but do add a measurable amount to the piston top and if you have had this engine built to tolerance... the coating may require the piston top to be machined a bit more

Oh... I too had the piston skirt coated.... you have MUCH less skirt then a stock piston...

sorry about the BADLY focused photo... but you get the idea....

I'ld agree, stay after from the gapless rings.

Much easier to reduce ring flutter (and increase HP) with conventional rings and larger end gaps, then messing about with gas ports and hoping they don't clog up.

Rep points are for those who feel inadequate in other areas !

great looking pistons, I have been wishing for this design on a street engine for a long time.

Now whats the go with this hybrid engine? I am unfamiliar with a 2UZ, why that particular combo? whats it get you?

    here are the weights

despite being 2mm OS compared to a 2UZ piston alone, its 15% lighter, as a piston+pin combo, the package comes in at 24% lighter, and with the lentz rod assembled (compared to a 617gr std rod), the whole shebang comes in around 25.5% lighter

heres my thread with the full rundown of the 1uz 2uz and 1uz vvti piston and rod weights:

    sam

the 1.5UZ hybrid uses the 2UZ block which is an iron block without cyl sleeves, and allows a bore out to 96mm (compared to stock bore of 1uz of 87.5mm)

now ive already got my 1uz (vvti) heads which i done a lot of work to and spent a chunk of cashola on, and with a little bit of fiddling these 1uz heads fit on the 2uz block without issue. only problem is the 1uz combustion chamber is obvioulsy not 96mm wide, and you can see in the piston crown design the flat rim on the done's edge to account for this slight mismatch. the rest of the crown is designed to match the sqiush pads of the 87.5mm dia 1uz combustion chamber.

the other thing ive done considering this will be a 10k motor, is drop the stroke 4mm from 82.5 to 78.5, and have gone a longer rod, from 146mm to 152.4mm. this slows the piston down enough to make 10k more sustainable, the rod stroke ratio is blown out to 1.94:1 which slows down the peaks in piston acceleration and takes side load off the piston skirt (which lets me get away with the smaller skirts above). and combined with a large drop in rot/recip weight, it should be an overall better package... oh yeah, and its got 15% more capacity over my current short block

    cheers
    ed
