    Default Hilux Gear box help!

Hi there, I have a 1990 4wd dual cab hilux (ridged front axel), originally fitted with the 2.4 L 22r now fitted with a Lexus 1uzfe, I have been running the standard G series box for almost a year now but cooked it last night.

So I am going to replace the box seeing as it would be pointless to rebuild it.

I am a wear that there is a G, W and R series box found in the 4wd 90’s model hilux.

I’m told that to fit the R series I would need a new bell housing and to modify the transfer case that came with it, as well as possibly make the transfer case electrics work, this seems to expensive and time consuming.

So I plan to fit the W series.

    My questions are,

Is the W series box stronger than the G series?

I currently have a forward shift type transfer case on the G series box, but I don’t think this will match up to a W series box?

I have found a 2000 model 2.7 petrol W56 5 speed gearbox and chain drive Transfer case
at a wrecker and am thinking about buying this but am a little hesitant that it’s the wrong thing.

I'm thinking idealy I want the w58 box as it has better ratios than the w56 (found behind a desiel)

If you want to swap a G52 for a W56 it will be no problems.

A W56 is stronger than a G52 but no match for an R151.

I have a RZN169+T with a reco W56 working well. But for freeway cruzin a W58 would be better.

Yea i have only managed to find w56 box + transfer case out of a 2000 modle 2.7l hilux im assumeing the 2.7 is an unleaded motor, i dont want a w series box with diesel ratios. Did the w series box ever come out in the pre 97 4wd hilux in aus?

Also will the transfer case off my g52 mate up with a w56 or w58 box? Or will i need to run the transfer case that comed with the w box? The w56 and transfer case looks like it will fit but it has studs in the drive shaft flanges on the transfer case, and my transfer case doesnt, im guessing its because that transfer case is for the 97 up ifs front hilux, will i have a problem if i connect this type of transfer case so my solid front axel set up?

Sorry if im wrong here, but arent you just able to take the transfer case off, and hook it up to any G or W series gearbox? Shouldnt the setup all be the same?
Its kind of pointless if you have to buy a new transfer case when purchase a new gearbox, should it happen to die.

The W series and the G series both use the same bellhousings, so I would think that you should be able to buy any W58 gearbox, unbolt the transfer case off the G52, and then bolt the W58 back in its place.

The transfer cas only attaches on the end of the box doesnt it? Between the engine and the gearbox?
If thats the case, then I cant see it being harder then swapping the boxes over.
Again, I may be wrong, but that is my understanding of it.

Just brought an r151f box, has non electric transfer case and it's foward shift, ill have to get a new bellhousing and change the output flanges on the transfer case but besides that i think its the better option
