I really haven´t understood what pulleys were for before.
A properly made toothed pulley would be equally made either it would be running a camshaft or an oil pump. Again: PROPERLY made.

Well after a bit more searching I have finally found 2 Companies that not only asked the right questions but are willing to quote up some pulleys for me Thanks Dave they were referals from M.I in St Kilda..

I m sending down my pulleys to Diecrest Engineering In Harcourt Vic to size up and get a quote,im sure there must be places in Syd but atleast this bloke spoke my language and understood the application. If the price isnt right there, there is Gearcutting in Dandenong. But they wanted a fax drawing of them so I will see how this old fello goes.


If anyone else is genuinly interested let me know and when he starts talking price, I will try and get the best deal by offering him more work and saving all of us some dosh.

Try giving Accurate Repetition in Peakhurst Sydney a ring and speck to Brett, they make pulley kits for cars in poly V (5rib belt) but i know they have machines there that can produce the square drive belt (mazak intergrex), you may have to buy a set of pulleys from Blackwood’s or CBC etc, and have the centre machined out to fit an adaptor ring.
but as you know if you what some think unique it will cost big buck's

just a thought could you us a pulley set for a Chev small block and adapt it?

Not always, on race cars, or more highly strung engines gilmer drive belts are common for all the ancillaries. The big difference is that for a timing belt you need to have accurate timing, which requires (theoretically) more machinework. Ancillaries arnt timed, and therefore you dont need to have equal number of teeth on pulleys etc.

How will you get the pulley mounted onto the harmonic balancer? or were you going to get a new harmonic balancer made up from scratch?

One to watch out for guys is to ensure that the tension on any gilmer or HTD pulley setup is not too tight or loose as the belts fail very quickly under these conditions. They tend to delaminate around the joint in the belt.

We were getting a lot of alternator flex (the mounts have been made to be parallel to the front of the block) and even using 10mm Al plate for the mounts, it was still managing to loosen itself off due to a couple of design faults. We've now fixed that and (touch wood) haven't had a failure yet.

The system I am using is alternator, crank pulley and dry sump pump with a HTD belt (timing belt from a KC Laser) and standard toyota crank/cam wheels with a custom small HTD one purchased through CBC. The dry sump tends to load things a little harder than water pumps, probably about the same as an A/C compressor when it cuts in.

Yeah im trying to get the measurements of all the off the shelf gilmer drive sets caus if i can jag a couple of them that only need some sort of adaptor,it saves a fortune on getting the same pulley made from scratch..

I have even signed up to a holden Gemini forum to find out the diameter of the pulleys on the SOHC 1.8 engine, as Gilmer make a kit for them.Hopefully if I can jag the alternator and maybe water pump and we're in business...

Its proving to be a forking mission,but I will get it sorted..

Ok, note to self, if you talk to CBC using big words which arnt brands then dont expect any coherent response.

No-one at CBC had any idea of what a Gilmer drive pulley was, but thanks to some tricky explainermerating it has been unearthed that a good supplier of Gilmer drive stuff here in Aus is Gates, with their "Powerchain GT" series. Which the sales monkey was more than happy to give a 5minute long spiel on.

I was thinking about the harmonic balancer it might be easier to just machine the v drive sections off it and then get the right sized pulley and machine the inside of that then get both balanced and have it press fit onto the harmonic balancer with a key and bolt to lock them together. The other 2 pulleys shouldnt be too hard to modify.

These pulleys are $18 from victoria in heaps of sizes, ie width, belt pitch, teeth etc

That would by far be the cheapest option imo, even if you buy the pulleys and get them modified to suit the alternator and water pump.

Top job leeroy,repzor headed your way...What we need to find out is if they have ones that will take gilmer belt 322L-100,that is the 1" one that is most commonly used,your spot on about the harmonic balancer key idea,thats what all the fab shops have been saying,but its really the least of out worries,getting as close to the sizes we need and then the neg offset for the water pump is guna be the killer...surely we can jag the crank and alternator through this mob and for another say 400 bucks have them fitted and the last pulley made up

or do you need diff to std because of the change to gilmer?

Just shift everythign out to +offset.
