Vac hose off/ split?
Float adjustment?
Does that carby have an idle jet, it could be blocked, but when you pour fuel down it would run.
Hey,
I've got a carby powered sv21 camry that won't idle. It drives fine as long as you don't let the revs drop below about 1500-2000rpm. Doesn't matter if it's hot or cold.
It will idle if I put a little fuel down the carby so I think it's a fuel problem. I've checked the fuel cut valve but not much else.
Any ideas?

It doesn't seem like a vac leak but with so many vac lines it's certainly possible. I have sprayed over them with carby cleaner and didn't find a leak.
It does have an idle jet but it has a plug over it from the factory. I'll see if I can get it out on Sunday and wash some fuel through it.
Anyone know if the emission suff, apart from the fule cut solenoid, do anything with idel fuel?
Hello.
If this is an SV 21 Camry and it has the 1S engine then it would be single point injected not carbied so that would fix one problem.
Cheers Brett.
3sfe in there bro
Hello.
Dont laugh but swap no 2 and 3 spark plug leads around and start it up and give it a bit of shit,it will backfire through the intake but it usually temporarily unblocks blocked jets if thats the problem
good chance it is the aap diaphragm,at the front of the carby (closest to rocker cover) there is a vacuum line going to a diapragm held in by 3 screws, the vacuum line is only about 40mm long.Disconnect vacuum line and check if there is fuel in the line - if so need to replace diaphragm, usually included in a carby kit($70).there should be (if you are lucky) a vacuum line diagram stuck to the underside of the bonnet to assist you in finding the correct hose.
to replace diaphragm it is easier to remove rocker cover to allow access to screws.
Hope this helps Scott.

Thanks for the correction
I took the rubber line off that goes to that diaphragm, it looked clean and nothing spilled out. I think I might just get another carby from the wreckers and swap them over.
I might perform a post mortem and see if I can find what was wrong, just for interests sake.
Hello.
Not sure if this model has them, but have you checked the idle solenoids to see if they tick?

A quick and easy bodge way of clearing a carby blockage I just learned when a race car mechanic did this to my brothers ute - take of air cleaner, rev the shit out of it then temporarily block the top of the carby off with hands/rag/whatever (handfull of bubble wrap used when he showed me) - the high revs stop the engine from completely stopping but it creates a vaccuum in the manifold - once you remove the air blockage, wooshka, the carby gets a quick air rush which hopefully clears the carby blockage... just don't block the air off with something that could fall apart and clog the carby further...
worked beautifully on my brother's Courier when it was displaying very similar problems to yours...
fast and free option, and no tools or replacement parts needed...
Cheers

Have you checked your fuses? There should be an engine fuse somewhere that supplies power to the fuel cut solenoid. If the fuse is blown or the solenoid is cactus then you will get the problems you are having. With some fuel cut solenoids you can unscrew the solenoid and then take the needle out of the solenoid then screw solenoid back into carby to see if it will run. If it does run then the problem is with the solenoid either not working or not getting power.
I have checked the solenoid as per the service book I have, says to touch 12v to it and it should tick. Seemed to tick away appropriatly.
I am yet to try swapping the no 2 and 3 leads or the stopping air flow thing. Both sound a little scary but I might still try them out
I will also check the fuses, hadn't thought of that one.
Hello.
Another option is depending if you have the equipment/know how, is to pull the top off the carby. Then with an air gun blow down a few of the holes to try and clear the blockages and drain the fuel bowl of the carby.
