bosch 0 227 100 211 is a 4 channel I think. May get one.
Car - don't ask, (RWD)
Motor - 3S-GE (from 1991 MR2)
The car had 4 individual coils, Bosch transformer style. And it had a 4 channel EMS igniter. The ECU only had 2 ignition outputs for 4 cyl, so the 4 inputs to the igniter were paired together. Wasted spark. Somehow it worked. Then the igniter got hot and at least 1 channel fried.
I tried to replace this with a Bosch 2 channel igniter, the Bosch 0227100200.
It works, but I have 2 coils running off each channel. And I think I am not suposed to run more than 1 coil per igniter, or 1 coil per channel. It runs, but rough (probably another problem), and the igniter is getting a bit hot.
I would not have designed the system with 4 coils, it should be 2 twin coils. Anyway. What should I do?
duel igniter with 4 coils
duel igniter with 2 duel coils
2 duel igniters with 4 coils
4 channel igniter with 4 coils

Yeah 100 221 is a 4channel ignitor. However, they run bloody hot, and ive had more than one nuke on me in the past. They also arnt exactly on the cheap side of things.
For the money i would reccommend the Microtech X4. Its a good dumb ignitor, and in the traditional Microtech way is massively overheatsinked and grounded. Quite a good little unit.

cheapest diy dumb ignitors ever:

couple Inside a box with a heatsink.
I made a three channel one and put them in a jaycar metal box with some plugs for my 1g. add a few diodes and you can get a signal suitable for the old tachos.
Really though i can't see any major reason why you shouldn't be able to drive two ignitor channels with one logic output from the ECU like you were doing.

Yep, that looks very cheap. I would do that for myself if I had the time. But the customer wants a regular igniter ready to go, and he wants the car going last weekend.
I have made a few mistakes with it, but I now found the EMS 4 channel igniter to replace it, on a website for $195. The Bosch 2 channel was $337!
Yeah. The Microtech ones are $150, and the Bosch 4chan is $420

Bugger all Karl. Few resistors and diodes.

yeah but i know the MSEFI site... everything is specially targeted towards using a Megasquirt.
I want to just make a dumb ignitor to run off my Adaptronic.
i did some scouring around.... it seems that i could just get four BIP373 coil drivers, some 330ohm resistors, supply earth... and i have a 4 channel ignitor.
Yes?
EDIT: doesnt need 12V. duh
...... butt scratcher?!
more info here by the way: http://www.diyautotune.com/tech_arti...megasquirt.htm
...... butt scratcher?!
yep exactly... nothing to do with msefi really.
my ignitor box literally has 3 coil driver chips with the earths all wired together. three logic level lines coming from the ecu with 3 330ohm series resistors and the other three ignitor 'outputs' connected to negatives of the coils.
actually mine are VB921's but the BIP373's are apparently more reliable and pin compatible (except need insulating), harder to break with over current etc.
A friend of mine ran these form Haltech outputs, so nothing specific to megasquirt here.

... i believe the words i am looking for are: FUCK + YES
in that order.
I will be ordering some BIP373s from DIYautotune now.
...... butt scratcher?!
I run these on my 3tgteu in wasted spark i.e. 4 of them cost about $24 and runs fantastic, I have used the old v921 which where better, just rember the milar strip, as the transiter really doesn't like to be shorted on the case.

i'll use silicon washers thanks
Mylar is old school.
...... butt scratcher?!
Witzl,
I think you will find that you need to use both, the washer with the hole (nylon bolts also) and the mylar on the back. The back is conductive, but also acts as a heat sink therfore requires a thin layer of insultation that is non conductive hence the mylar on the back (both washers and mylar come with the BIP373).
Yes the BIP373 are better as they are almost impossible to break with over current but the insulation can be a mongrel, improper insulation installation results in the spark across the back of the BIP373 to the case/heatshrink and no spark at the coil/plug.
